MJF's recent hiatus from AEW stems from him being cast in the Happy Gilmore sequel.
Per Justin Kroll of Deadline.com, MJF joined the cast that already includes Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce in a cameo and rap star Bad Bunny.
Details of the former AEW world champion's role are unknown at this point. Netflix officially greenlit the sequel to Sandler's 1996 sports-comedy classic in May. The streamer revealed on Sept. 9 that production was officially underway.
Sandler revealed on the Aug. 21 episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that Kelce would have some role in the movie after he was spotted in Los Angeles wearing a Happy Gilmore hat.
Julie Bowen (Virginia Venit) and Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin) are among the cast members from the original movie confirmed to be returning for the sequel.
Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who co-wrote the original, wrote the script for the new film. Kyle Newacheck will direct after previously working with Sandler on 2019's Murder Mystery.
MJF has been absent from AEW since defeating Daniel Garcia at All Out on Sept. 7. He was laid out after the win when Garcia gave him a piledriver off the second rope in an apparent injury angle to write him off television.
Happy Gilmore 2 is one of three movies that MJF has worked on in 2024. Kroll noted he recently wrapped production on an independent comedy titled The Floaters and will appear in Stranglehold as part of a bad-guy duo with Ron Perlman.
MJF was cast in The Iron Claw—about the Von Erich wrestling family—that released last year, but his role as Lance Von Erich was significantly reduced during the editing process. He did retain an executive producer credit on the project.
