Backstage WWE and AEW Rumors: Latest on AJ Styles, Bron Breakker, and More

Erik Beaston

AJ Styles is one of the best professional wrestlers of the last two decades, but the future Hall of Famer has been conspicuous in his absence from WWE television recently.

The latest on his status with the company, and pro wrestling as a whole, headlines this week's collection of pro wrestling rumors.

Joining it are updates on Dominik Mysterio's role in the Women's World Championship match between Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan at Bad Blood, Bron Breakker following his intercontinental title loss to Jey Uso, and Daniel Garcia's contractual status with All Elite Wrestling.

AJ Styles' WWE Future In Question

"AJ Styles' future in wrestling is uncertain," Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported.

He added: "Those within the industry that Fightful spoke with are of the belief that AJ Styles' WWE contract is up either late this year or early next year. We've not heard if there have been efforts to re-sign him or if he has plans moving forward."

Styles was last seen on WWE television at Clash at the Castle in June, when he lost an "I Quit" match to undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes. Since then, he has only wrestled international tour matches against The American Nightmare.

One of the most decorated and respected wrestlers of his generation, the 47-year-old would seem to have plenty left to offer WWE at this point in his career.

If he wants to, that is.

Styles spoke recently about his career and how much time he realistically has left in the business in an interview with WrestleManiac UK.

"You know, my brain's going, 'We don't have a lot of time left,'" he said. "My body's going, 'No, we can go.' 'No, we can't.' It's an argument between my body and my brain on how much longer we can go, and I can tell you it won't go much longer. Time's running out really quick."

The Phenomenal One has accomplished nearly everything in a career dating to 1998. Whatever he chooses to do would seemingly be for the love of the game.

Whether it is with WWE, AEW, New Japan Pro-Wrestling, TNA Wrestling or a random indie show close to home, Styles has earned the right to end his career as he sees fit.

Update on Dominik Mysterio's Role at Bad Blood

Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com reported that one major development surrounding the Bad Blood premium live event card was not a last-minute addition.

"We are told the Dominik Mysterio hanging in the shark cage stipulation has been planned for Bad Blood for several months. It was not a late addition to plans for the Atlanta event," he wrote.

Rhea Ripley revealed the decision by Raw general manager Adam Pearce this past Monday night.

The shark cage gimmick dates back decades in pro wrestling, with names such as Triple H, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Paul Heyman and Chyna spending time in the steel confines as a means of keeping them from interfering in a high-stakes contest.

That Mysterio has an on-screen history of being locked up following an invasion of his parent's home two holiday seasons ago only adds to the appropriateness of its use on October 5 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Mysterio is a great heel, a classic coward who is despised by the fans. Expect considerable entertainment to come from his placement over his new love interest's title defense against his ex.

Bron Breakker to Undergo Babyface Turn?

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio reported that Bron Breakker may be in line for a babyface turn after losing the Intercontinental Championship to Jey Uso in the main event of Monday's Raw.

While it may appear to be a sudden about-face from a creative perspective, there is little denying how over Breakker has been with fans since joining the main roster in February.

Whether it was wreaking havoc through his beatdowns of Ricochet and Ilja Dragunov or encouraging the fans by saying "The dogs are barking," he has had the backing of the WWE Universe.

The seemingly sudden decision to take the title off of him would make more sense, too, as the 26-year-old successfully defending against Uso would have infuriated fans and made it more difficult to execute a face turn.

If Breakker is turned babyface, expect his rise to the top of the industry to come quicker than it would have had he remained a heel.

AEW Less Confident About Daniel Garcia Re-Signing

On the same edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer reported AEW is less confident in its ability to re-sign Daniel Garcia than it was previously.

"The strong confidence that he was signed...I wouldn't say it's as strong, but I wouldn't say he's leaving, either. But it's not as strong as it was a month ago...he may leave," he said.

Meltzer had reported before All Out on September 7 that Garcia had received an offer from WWE but would be sticking with AEW.

At the pay-per-view, though, the 26-year-old lost a match to MJF that, narratively speaking, made little sense.

Since then, he has remained off television without a follow-up. What was a relatively hot program with the former world champion disappeared without a word and now we appear to know why.

Tony Khan and Co. opting not to highlight a young star who may go elsewhere to continue his career is the right call. Whether that affects AEW's ability to get the deal done with Garcia is a different question, though.
