Ranking Roman Reigns and the 10 Most Important Men's Wrestlers in WWE, AEW Today

Doc-Chris Mueller

WWE and All Elite Wrestling are the top two American wrestling promotions today, and between them, they employ well over 100 wrestlers at every level.

AEW also has Ring of Honor, but the roster is essentially one giant talent pool. WWE is much more segmented with separate rosters for Raw, SmackDown and NXT.

Not only do both companies need dozens of stars to fill several hours of weekly television, but they also need several on the bench to step up in case of injuries, cycle in to keep the product fresh and train to be the next generation of top stars.

Right now, WWE and AEW both have a lot of vital people who keep viewers tuning in every week. Let's take a look at the most important stars across both companies.

This list will only feature the men's division. Make sure to check back next week for a list of the most important women.

10. Will Ospreay

Will Ospreay hasn't been in AEW for long, but he has firmly established himself as one of the most important stars on the roster.

Every match The Aerial Assassin has is a show-stealer, and his promos have a genuine quality to them that makes him easy to like.

As the international champion, the English wrestler is front and center on a lot of AEW programming, especially on shows when the world champion isn't present.

Ospreay is one of the best talents AEW has signed and as long as he remains uninjured, he is going to be as valuable as anyone in front of or behind the camera.

9. CM Punk

CM Punk's AEW run was filled with drama and controversy, but his current WWE tenure has been smooth sailing.

His popularity is going to make him a draw for any promotion, and his ability to tell stories is what makes him so captivating to watch.

The Best in the World isn't the biggest, strongest, most agile, most technical or most violent, but he is able to pull you in and make you care about the story he is telling. In some ways, that is a WWE Superstar's most valuable trait.

Punk is going to make WWE a lot of money if he can stay healthy and continue to perform the way he has been.

8. The Young Bucks

Matthew and Nicholas Jackson are two of the founders of AEW, they serve as executive vice presidents and have been two of the faces of the tag team division for the company's entire existence. Not including them would be a mistake.

The Young Bucks are not everyone's cup of tea, but the ones who do like them tend to be diehard fans.

Their current reign as tag team champions could come to an end very soon, but until that happens, they will be on our screens every week in their colorful suit vests.

Love them or hate them, there's no denying how important the Bucks are to AEW both in and out of the ring.

7. Gunther

Gunther is, without a doubt, one of the best-booked Superstars of this millennium, especially in WWE.

His reigns as NXT UK, NXT and intercontinental champion are among the most dominant title runs in WWE history, and his time as the world heavyweight champ has seen him continue to shine.

Gunther is valuable for a multitude of reasons, but the two biggest are his ability to put on a hard-hitting bout and his international appeal.

When WWE held Bash in Berlin on Aug. 31, the Austrian wrestler was cheered as a hero.

Having non-American stars is important for WWE to maintain a broad appeal around the world, and The Ring General is a great asset in that regard.

6. Bryan Danielson

Bryan Danielson has been vocal about wrapping up his full-time career in the near future so he can be healthy enough to raise his kids and spend time with them, but for now, he is the AEW world heavyweight champion.

It's hard to find a more respected wrestler than the 43-year-old. He has been to the top of the mountain and worked in gymnasiums in front of a handful of fans.

His clear passion for professional wrestling is what makes him so easy to like. He loves it as much as any fan and you can see the joy on his face every time he gets to perform.

The American Dragon has been one of AEW's best signings since its inception. He has helped put over numerous young talents while also being successful in his own right.

How Danielson will handle being betrayed by Jon Moxley is yet to be seen, but their eventual showdown is going to be one for the ages.

5. Seth Rollins

If you have a conversation about the most consistent performers in the wrestling industry today, Seth Rollins needs to be part of it.

Countless show-stealing matches, just as many memorable outfits, and a personality that works in both comedic and serious scenarios have made The Visionary a beloved Superstar.

Rollins is someone WWE can put into any division and he will do well. He's been a solid midcard champion, a tag team champion and a world champion several times over.

He works as a heel and a face, and he is one of the most versatile in-ring performers on the roster because he combines power, agility and technical ability in a way few can.

When it comes to Rollins being back in the world title scene, it's a matter of when, not if.

4. Swerve Strickland

Swerve Strickland has already earned one of the top spots in AEW after a few short years by consistently delivering top-quality matches and being a masterful storyteller.

His feud with "Hangman" Adam Page has been unlike anything we have seen in years. They have not only brought a new level of violence to televised wrestling, but they have also taken the feud to a level beyond most by burning a house down for the sake of a pre-taped video.

Strickland is also a popular podcaster and a musician, so he can help AEW bridge that gap between pro wrestling and mainstream pop culture.

He may not have gold around his waist, but AEW is still Swerve's house.

3. Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes is the undisputed WWE champion, but the reason he ranks so high on this list is that his job in WWE is much more than just being a titleholder.

The American Nightmare fills a specific role. He is the ultimate babyface. He's the patriot who is still cheered by fans around the world. He's the guy you send to do interviews on Good Morning America. He's the guy WWE relies on to represent the company in the most professional of settings.

The 39-year-old is occupying the role that used to belong to guys such as John Cena, The Rock and Hulk Hogan. It's a lot of pressure, but this is what he has been working toward his entire career.

His storyline goal has always been to hold the WWE title, which his brother and father never got to do, but the real goal was to be one of the faces of the company, and Rhodes has been in that spot since the day he returned.

2. Kenny Omega

Even with two almost year-long breaks due to injuries in the short five-year life of AEW, Kenny Omega is still the heart and soul of the company.

Twitter accounts post updates counting how many days since his last match because people are clamoring to see him back in a ring.

Obviously, most fans want him to be healthy and only return if his body will allow it, but the desire to see your favorites perform will always be there.

The Best Bout Machine has unfinished business with a lot of people and many new potential rivals in AEW who are waiting for a chance to steal the show with him.

Omega's return is going to be heavily celebrated by AEW fans, and hopefully, it happens sooner rather than later.

1. Roman Reigns

Even without a title, and even without needing to work weekly matches, Roman Reigns sits atop the mountain in WWE all by himself.

His merchandise is guaranteed to sell well, his segments are always going to be given significant time, and his feuds are built up over time with a lot of storytelling and character development.

The Original Tribal Chief has been an important star since The Shield made its debut in 2012, but for the past handful of years, Reigns and The Bloodline have been WWE's bread and butter.

His feuds with Brock Lesnar, Rollins, Jey Uso, Rhodes and Sami Zayn have been some of the best stories told in the company, and his rivalry with Solo Sikoa has already started picking up steam.

The rest of 2024 is going to be an interesting time for Reigns. Will we see him reclaim power in The Bloodline? Will he reclaim the WWE title? Will he get his Wiseman back?

Time will tell.

This was a difficult list to compile as both companies have a lot of valuable assets. Who do you think should be on the list who didn't make the cut?
