Report: Air Force, UNLV, San Jose to Commit to Mountain West Amid Realignment Rumors

As the conference realignment wheels continue to turn, UNLV, Air Force and San Jose State will reportedly remain committed to the Mountain West.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Monday that UNLV and San Jose State will commit to their current conference. What's more, Chris Vannini of The Athletic reported Monday that Air Force will do the same.

"This looms large for the Mountain West, as UNLV and Air Force are considered the flagship schools for the league's future," Thamel wrote.

Even the biggest college football fans may have trouble keeping everything straight in the new world of conference realignment.

Notably, Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC, while Oregon, USC, UCLA and Washington went to the Big Ten. Then it seemed like the Pac-12 might disappear entirely when Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah went to the Big 12 and California, Stanford and SMU went to the ACC.

That left just Oregon State and Washington State in the Pac-12, although the league fought back and will add Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State from the Mountain West.

"Mountain West leadership spent the weekend working to get its eight remaining members to commit to each other, either through a grant of rights or other financial means," Vannini wrote. "That process remains ongoing. The league is supposed to have around $111 million coming its way in the ensuing years through exit fees and poaching fees from the Pac-12."

Vannini also noted the American Athletic Conference targeted Air Force and UNLV, while the Pac-12 was considering both in addition to Utah State.

But the Mountain West schools aren't the only ones staying put, as Memphis, Tulane, South Florida and UTSA announced Monday they are still committed to the American Athletic Conference amid interest from other leagues:

The Pac-12 will surely look to add more football schools, and Vannini suggested it could be incentivized to bring the entire rest of the Mountain West into the fold and waive all exit fees given the latest developments.

After all, it needs at least eight football members by 2026 to be eligible for an automatic bid into the current College Football Playoff format.

But football additions might not be the only thing in store, as Nicole Auerbach of NBC Sports reported the Pac-12 and Gonzaga have engaged in "serious conversations" about the Bulldogs joining the conference in the future.

There will surely be more dominos to fall, but some of the Mountain West is at least staying put for now.
