Even though the consensus opinion is the Carolina Panthers made the right decision to bench Bryce Young after an abysmal start to this season, the 23-year-old quarterback strongly disagrees with the move.
Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, one person described Young as "pissed" about being replaced by Andy Dalton as Carolina's starter.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced on Monday that Dalton would start in Week 3 against the Las Vegas Raiders.
"This is the best decision for our team going forward," Canales said.
The move came amid a disastrous start for both Young and the team. He completed 55.4 percent of his attempts (31-of-56) for 245 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in two games.
Carolina was outscored 73-13 in losses to the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers.
Beyond the box score stats, the evaluation of how Young specifically played in those games was not encouraging.
The Panthers used a lot of resources in the offseason to improve the situation around Young after he struggled as a rookie. Canales was hired after a successful 2023 season as Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator in which Baker Mayfield set career-highs in passing yards (4,044) and passing touchdowns (28).
They signed guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis in free agency to upgrade the interior of the offensive line. Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette were added to the receiver room.
Despite all of these moves, Young has played worse to start this season than he did as a rookie. The former No. 1 overall pick completed 59.8 percent of his attempts for 2,877 yards with 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 starts last year.
There may come a time when the Panthers get Young back on the field this season to see if time away from the spotlight helps him, but Canales and the coaching staff had to do what was in the best interest of the other players on the roster at this point.
