Ben Roethlisberger: Justin Fields Should Be Steelers QB1 Even if Wilson is Healthy

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 2-0 with Justin Fields under center this season, and a franchise legend doesn't want head coach Mike Tomlin to make a quarterback change given the early momentum.

Ben Roethlisberger advocated for Pittsburgh sticking with Fields over veteran Russell Wilson even when the latter recovers from the calf injury that sidelined him for the first two games.

"He didn't turn the ball over," Roethlisberger said on his podcast (31-minute mark) when discussing Fields. "Sure, would you like to see 400 yards and three touchdowns and one rushing touchdown? Of course you would.

"But you know what else you're going to be happy with? You're going to be happy with a guy right now who wasn't even supposed to start this year going 2-0, taking care of the football, making plays—sometimes out of nothing when guys are getting in there and he needs to use his legs. He's going to use his legs and he's another running back back there. He's huge. It's not easy to bring him down. So far, I like what I've seen."

Roethlisberger also said Fields "earned the right to stay there."

Pittsburgh has an elite defense that has allowed a combined 16 points through victories over the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. As long as Fields, or whoever the quarterback is, protects the ball and avoids critical mistakes, the AFC North team will likely be in a position to win every game.

And that is exactly what he's done so far by completing 69.8 percent of his passes for 273 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions while adding 84 yards on the ground as a runner.

While Fields never fully lived up to the expectations of becoming a franchise quarterback that were placed on him with the Chicago Bears, he started to build momentum at the end of the 2023 campaign by going 4-2 in his final six games while making plays with his arm in addition to his legs.

The start of this season is just a continuation of that on a team that likely has better pieces and coaching around him than he had in Chicago.

Wilson may be a future Hall of Famer with nine Pro Bowls on his resume, but he struggled to play at his typical level during the past two seasons with the Denver Broncos and has not gotten a chance to take the field for Pittsburgh.

If Fields keeps winning games, the veteran may remain on the sideline for longer than expected.
