MLB Rumors: Mets' Pete Alonso Leads Team Meeting amid Lindor Injury, Playoff Push

Scott Polacek

This may be Pete Alonso's final season with the New York Mets since he is scheduled to hit free agency this offseason, but he is reportedly taking a leadership role ahead of the team's playoff push.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported president of baseball operations David Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza called a team meeting Monday to discuss Francisco Lindor's back injury and how the team would respond.

It was at that meeting that Alonso spoke with "passion" that stood out when discussing how important it is for the team to finish the regular season on a high note and make the playoffs, per Sherman.

The slugger focused on how much he wants to celebrate with his teammates since he has been in the playoffs just once in his career and didn't get a chance to at that time.

New York reached the postseason in 2022 but learned on the final day of the regular season it would not win the National League East. Instead, it fell into a wild-card position, so there wasn't a mood of celebration heading into the playoffs.

The Mets then lost in the first round and didn't get to celebrate advancing.

This year's team is in position to potentially celebrate. It is likely not going to catch the Philadelphia Phillies in the division with an eight-game deficit and 12 games remaining, so all eyes are on the wild-card race.

And it is one game ahead of the Atlanta Braves for that final wild-card spot, which sets up a thrilling race to the finish and an opportunity to unleash quite the party for the winner.

Alonso is slashing .242/.329/.465 with 32 home runs and 81 RBI on the season and will be tasked with helping carry the offense down the stretch. Fortunately for the Mets, his co-star isn't expected to miss the rest of the season.

Lindor said he "should be back" before the playoffs following an MRI that revealed no structural damage, per ESPN's Jorge Castillo.

New York has series against the Washington Nationals, Phillies, Braves and Milwaukee Brewers to finish the year. That three-game set in Atlanta from Sept. 24-26 could ultimately decide the wild-card race and whether Alonso will be celebrating with his teammates.

In an ideal world for the Mets, that will be the first of a handful of celebrations this fall.
