Jon Jones Will 'More Than Likely' Retire After Stipe Miocic Fight at UFC 309

Joseph Zucker

UFC 309 could be the last time Jon Jones steps inside the Octagon.

The heavyweight champion told Clocked N' Loaded his Nov. 16 clash with Stipe Miocic is "going to be the last time" he competes before quickly conceding that's "more than likely" rather than definitive.

Given both his age, 37, and how sporadically he has competed, it's little surprise he's looking to officially wind down his career.

Jones hasn't fought since March 2023, when he submitted Ciryl Gane in the first round at UFC 285 to claim the vacant heavyweight title. That ended a three-year layoff, which resulted from a long-running pay dispute with the UFC.

From a competitive perspective, his legacy in MMA is largely secured as well. He's universally regarded as one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters ever after having dominated the light heavyweight division before successfully moving up to heavyweight.

Some fans are likely to feel a bit underwhelmed that this is how Jones would exit the sport, though.

Beating Miocic won't mean what it once did if Jones comes out victorious. Miocic turned 42 in August, and his last fight both resulted in a second-round knockout and was way back in March 2021.

Jones vs. Miocic was originally supposed to happen last November before the former tore his pectoral in training. Sticking with the plan makes sense because this is likely to be a solid draw commercially.

Pitting Jones against Tom Aspinall, who claimed the interim heavyweight championship in 2023 and successfully defended it against Curtis Blaydes in July, is a much more interesting matchup, though. The English fighter is 15-3 with 12 wins by knockout or TKO.

Should Jones retire, leaving that on the table would be a missed opportunity.
