Haason Reddick Out 'About $8M' Total by Missing Jets' W2 Game amid Contract Holdout

New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick is willing to pay a steep short-term cost for a bigger long-term payday.

Ahead of the Jets' game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that a new contract for Reddick "doesn't appear anywhere close at this time." As a result, his missed earnings will climb to "about $8 million" overall thanks to his ongoing holdout.

The Jets knew when they acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in April they were heading toward a potential standoff. His desire for a long-term extension was out in the open.

New York may not have thought the two-time Pro Bowler's resolve would be this strong, though. As demonstrated by Reddick, the financial consequences of a regular-season holdout are so punitive that a player has to wave the white flag sooner or later.

Both sides have held firm throughout the process. ESPN's Rich Cimini reported on Reddick's trade request in August, writing that the Jets "won't negotiate with a player unless he's in camp." But Reddick wouldn't show up without an agreement in place.

At this point, the 29-year-old might be banking on New York having the kind of poor start that leads the front office to blink.

The Jets got pushed around in their 32-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1. Niners running back ran for 147 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per carry, while Brock Purdy threw for 231 yards and didn't have any interceptions.

The franchise clearly envisioned Reddick playing a big role in 2024 considering it sent a conditional third-round pick to Philly for a player on an expiring contract. He might gain serious leverage if New York's defense doesn't improve in the coming weeks.
