NFL Rumors: Chiefs View Bengals as 'Older,' and 'Not Built to Lock Up and Defend'

The Kansas City Chiefs believe the Cincinnati Bengals are "older and, at this moment, not built to lock up and defend" when the two teams meet for Sunday afternoon's Week 2 matchup, Dianna Russini reported for The Athletic.

"They do believe Cincinnati has enough in its arsenal to mix coverages and pressures to force the Chiefs to earn their points via long scoring drives," Russini wrote.

The Bengals are heading into their sixth season with defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, who expressed frustration with his unit outside of edge defender Trey Hendrickson after the team's Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots.

Russini described Anarumo's past defensive strategy against Kansas City as "red zone defense critical in forcing the Chiefs to kick field goals."

The defending Super Bowl champions were successful in overcoming that strategy during the two teams' last matchup on Dec. 31.

With Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow out with a wrist injury, kicker Harrison Butker converted six straight field goals to lead the Chiefs to a Week 17 win that eliminated the Bengals from playoff contention.

Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase recently described the Bengals as "the team to beat in the AFC," per ESPN's Ben Baby.

In order to cement that status, the Bengals will need to prove they can limit opponents' running game more than they were able to while allowing 170 rushing yards by the Patriots.

Anarumo will look for more comprehensive defense from the Bengals when the Week 2 matchup kicks off at 4:25 p.m. ET.
