College Football 2024: B/R's Top 25 Rankings After Week 3

Joel Reuter

After last weekend gave us four upsets of ranked teams by unranked opponents—including the shocking Northern Illinois over Notre Dame game—it looked like another massive upset was brewing when Kentucky led No. 1 Georgia at halftime.

Instead, this weekend's action ended up being chalk across the board as far as the nation's Top 25 teams were concerned.

No unranked team knocked off a ranked opponent, and the Week 3 slate offered just two matchups between ranked squads. Kansas State scored a lopsided 31-7 victory over Arizona on Friday night, while Missouri eked out a 27-21 victory over upstart Boston College on Saturday afternoon.

Despite the lack of upsets, there was still shuffling to be done in this week's Top 25 poll here at Bleacher Report.

This week's panel included David Kenyon, Adam Kramer, Morgan Moriarty, Joel Reuter and Brad Shepard. A first-place vote was worth 25 points, a second-place vote worth 24 points and so on.

Who's Hot: Big 12 Playoff Contenders

The top nine teams in the latest AP poll all reside in the Big Ten or the SEC, while the Miami Hurricanes have stepped forward as the front-runner in the ACC, but the automatic bid into the College Football Playoff out of the Big 12 is still wide open.

Entering the week, No. 12 Utah, No. 13 Oklahoma State and No. 14 Kansas State were all bunched together in the middle of the AP poll, and all three put together impressive performances.

K-State made a statement against a ranked Arizona team on Friday night, with quarterback Avery Johnson throwing for 156 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 110 yards on the ground.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma State and Utah are set to go head-to-head next weekend after taking care of business against overmatched opponents on the road.

And don't forget about Iowa State. The Cyclones vaulted into the AP poll after beating in-state rival Iowa last weekend, but were inactive on a bye week this week.

Who's Not: Upset-Minded Underdogs

The Week 3 schedule was littered with potential upset opportunities, but none of the underdogs were able to seal the deal.

Going on the road in the SEC is never easy, even for the No. 1 team in the country, and Kentucky put a legitimate scare into Georgia, The Wildcats led 6-3 at halftime and carried a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs finally found the end zone for the first time with 12:20 left to play. Kentucky kept it interesting with a field goal on its ensuing drive, but they couldn't get the big stop they needed to regain control.

Elsewhere in the SEC, South Carolina built an early 17-0 lead over No. 16 LSU and still held a 33-29 lead into the fourth quarter. It was an ugly game for the Tigers, but a late touchdown from Josh Williams and a missed 49-yard field goal attempt by the Gamecocks with five seconds left allowed LSU to escape with a 36-33 victory.

An upstart Boston College team also hung around with Missouri in what turned out to be a 27-21 game, but once again the SEC favorite avoided the upset.

Heading into the weekend, Alabama at Wisconsin and Oregon at Oregon State both looked like potentially tough road games, but the two favorites ended up winning by a combined 67 points. Tulane also failed to come away with a potential resume builder against Oklahoma after hanging around with Kansas State a week ago.

The stage was set for a major upset, but the ranked team managed to escape unscathed time and time again in Week 3.

What's Next

The middle of the Top 25 poll will have a new look at this time next week.

There are three matchups of ranked teams on tap for next weekend, and the outcome of those games should help provide some separation in the middle of the pack as conference play gets underway.

Here's what's on tap:

Those rankings could move a bit once the new AP poll is released, but all six of those teams either won or were on a bye this weekend.

Can Michigan overcome its quarterback issues? Which Big 12 contender will score a major resume builder? Who will step up in the battle of first-year starting quarterbacks between Nico Iamaleava and Jackson Arnold?

Elsewhere on the schedule, there is an intriguing matchup in the Big Ten on Friday night when Nebraska welcomes an undefeated Illinois squad knocking on the door for a spot in the Top 25 poll to Lincoln.

Then on Saturday, a pair of SEC matchups (Vanderbilt at Missouri, Arkansas at Auburn) and ACC matchups (NC State at Clemson, Georgia Tech at Louisville) will also have major poll implications, while Kansas State will try to keep things rolling on the road against BYU.

Finally, early upstart Northern Illinois is back in action against Buffalo as the Huskies look to pick up where they left off in their upset victory over Notre Dame prior to a bye week this Saturday.

See you next Saturday!
