Buy or Sell WWE's Recent Contract Rumors, Hurt Business Revival in AEW and More

Chris Roling

The downright breakneck speed of major pro wrestling events for WWE and AEW has finally eased off for at least a few weeks.

But that doesn't mean the pro wrestling rumor mill is slowing at all.

Impressively, it might have even sped up.

Downtime usually leads to even more rumors hitting the mill for fans to analyze. There are new feuds that drive speculation, question marks on the cards of upcoming big shows, and the standard free-agency questions. Right now, there are even major meta-happenings in the sport's landscape as weekly programs get ready to change channels.

Which is to say there is quite a lot for fans to somehow keep up with every day. Here's a look at the most notable rumors making the rounds and whether fans should buy or sell on each.

Hurt Business Reunion Incoming?

One of the long-held fan theories about a certain faction sounds like it is about to come true.

According to Ibou of WrestlePurists (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), The Hurt Business could be debuting together on AEW programming soon.

That one is an easy buy. MVP, Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin formed the nucleus of an incredible faction founded in 2020 at WWE. It eventually fell on the backburner, but it sure felt like there was a lot that the company simply didn't utilize.

And that's not even a shot at WWE—while things transitioned to the Triple H era, a much bigger emphasis went to longer title runs and the top storylines on all programming were pretty much set.

AEW, just looking at the top of the cards right now, wouldn't make the same mistake. And The Hurt Bussiness' whole vibe just feels like it would be the perfect faction addition to the roster.

Raw Runtime Change Details

WWE seriously shocked fans seemingly out of nowhere (sorry, Randy) this past week with the reveal that Raw would be going back to a two-hour format.

The company apparently shocked many of its employees, too.

According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), many employees had no idea the change was coming and found out alongside fans as it was announced.

It feels like a huge sell.

On one hand, keeping the news quiet to prevent leaks would be a smart move. But on the other, this sort of news leaking just...isn't that big of a deal. It's not comparable to say, a leak ruining a surprise Superstar's return.

Considering so many people behind the scenes probably had to know that the change was coming in order to prep accordingly, it feels safe to float this one as a sell.

Verdict: Selling

WWE Contract Updates

It's "WWE approaches Superstars about contract extensions" season, folks.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Ortman), WWE approached "a number of people" with contracts expring soon about new deals.

The only person named in the rumor? Asuka.

This one files under the no-brainer buy column. Barring a Superstar being unhappy with things, seemingly like the aforementioned Bobby Lashley, WWE is like any sports team in that it will always be in contact with players about contract details.

Asuka is a good example of this. A former women's champion with a historic overall resume, she's a natural fit near the top of the card for as long as she wants to keep wrestling.

As always, WWE would benefit from Asuka's continued presence while also keeping her away from direct competitors, too, which would also seemingly give her plenty of leverage in those contract talks.

Machine Gun Kelly vs. Randy Orton Update

A very strange story broke over the last week or so when musical artist Machine Gun Kelly claimed that he had a backstage confrontation with Randy Orton at SummerSlam.

It was strange for many reasons, but one of the top is simple—fans were forced to wonder if it was some sort of storyline or leaked thing the company wanted to promote ahead of another appearance from a celebrity.

Orton publicly clapping back at MGK online over the comments didn't help onlookers better perceive the situation, either.

But according to Fightful Select (h/t Ortman), WWE was, in fact, not involved with these comments and also hasn't seen any footage that confirms what the artist claimed.

Given how things have unfolded so far, this vibes like a buy, as does the report saying those within WWE think MGK was merely "working" in the pro wrestling sense during that interview.

Verdict: Buying

WWE Planning Huge Ratings for Debut

NXT is making a change and WWE wants to do massive numbers when it does.

So says the latest report from Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Ortman), who recently said that WWE wants to run up one million viewers when the weekly program makes its debut on The CW.

It's an ambitious goal, though a buyable one. WWE has already started this massive push by saying that main-roster stars such as Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair and even CM Punk will have spots on the show.

That's as good of confirmation as fans will be able to find for any sort of rumor, really, as the Shawn Michaels-led product continues its resurgence.

NXT's debut in its new home will happen on Tuesday, October 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

Verdict: Buying
