Video: Aces' A'ja Wilson Sets WNBA Single-Season Scoring Record, Passes Jewell Loyd

Jewell Loyd's record didn't last long.

The Seattle Storm star set the record for the most points in a single WNBA season in 2023 with 939, but Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson surpassed that mark this season.

Wilson needed 11 points to reach 940 entering Wednesday's game against the Indiana Fever, and she accomplished the feat in the first half with a pull-up jump shot.

That it is Wilson who set the record isn't surprising, as she also has the fourth-highest scoring total for a single season from the 2023 campaign. She poured in 912 points last year while helping lead the Aces to their second straight championship.

But the two-time MVP and six-time All-Star has elevated her game to yet another level in 2024.

She entered Wednesday's contest averaging 27.3 points, 11.9 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 1.9 steals per game while shooting 52.7 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from deep. Wilson has also surpassed 40 points in three different games this season.

While the future Hall of Famer now has the record for total points in a season, she is also well on her way to breaking the record for points per game as well.

Diana Taurasi set that figure in 2006 with 25.3 points per game, and Wilson is on pace to break that mark with ease. She could also become the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a season since the Aces still have four remaining games after Wednesday's contest.

Wilson is in all likelihood going to take home the third MVP of her iconic career, and the biggest remaining question is whether her Aces can win a third straight title. They would become the first team to do so in WNBA history since the Houston Comets won the league's first four championships, but it won't be easy.

After all, Las Vegas is the No. 4 seed in the WNBA standings and won't have home-court advantage against the New York Liberty, Minnesota Lynx or Connecticut Sun if the seedings hold.

But the Aces will have the dominant Wilson, which means they will have an opportunity to win every time they take the floor.
