2024 NFL Free-Agent Signings That Should Happen After Week 1 Injuries

Brad Gagnon

The opening week of the 2024 NFL regular season has left a lot of teams scrambling to plug holes that either became more glaring or are now appearing for the first time.

Several key injuries have factored into these situations.

Let's look at a handful of those injuries and suggest candidates on the open market to replace the players in question.

The injury: QB Jordan Love (knee)

The Packers say they're rolling with Malik Willis until Jordan Love is cleared to return, which might only be a couple weeks from now but could easily be longer.

And that's a huge risk, because Green Bay will be in a tough fight all year in the NFC North, and Willis is someone who couldn't make the cut in Tennessee.

The free agent: Ryan Tannehill

The Packers really can't afford to roll with Willis and Sean Clifford for multiple weeks, and Ryan Tannehill is the best option available on the open market.

The 36-year-old put up elite numbers just a few years ago and has tons of experience compared to Willis and Clifford, who have a combined zero career touchdown passes to three interceptions.

The injury: WR Puka Nacua (knee)

The 2023 rookie sensation has been sent to injured reserve after spraining his right MCL in a Week 1 loss to the Lions. That means the Rams will be without his services until Week 7 at the earliest.

The free agent: Chase Claypool

There's some decent depth beyond Nacua and Cooper Kupp, but the Rams would probably prefer not to rely much on Tyler Johnson, Tutu Atwell and/or Jordan Whittington.

Chase Claypool hasn't cut it in multiple stops since shining in Pittsburgh, but the talent is there and he's still only 26. Maybe this could be the right environment for him to rediscover something.

Michael Thomas is another veteran option, but L.A. should bring someone in for a tough stretch.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The injury: CB Tyson Campbell (hamstring)

The big-money 24-year-old "will miss some time" due to a hamstring injury, which is far from ideal with the Jaguars' backs against the wall following a tough Week 1 loss to Miami and trips to Buffalo and Houston looming this month.

They have added Zech McPhearson to the practice squad, but more substantial reinforcements may be in order.

The free agent: Ahkello Witherspoon

It would be great if they could coax the hugely underrated Steven Nelson out of his recent retirement, but that's likely a long-shot scenario and who knows what kind of shape the 31-year-old is in.

Ahkello Witherspoon would do, though. The 29-year-old was extremely good with the Rams last year, intercepting three passes and surrendering receptions on fewer than half of the passes thrown into his coverage.

Cleveland Browns

The injury: TE David Njoku (ankle)

Coming off an 882-yard campaign, the 28-year-old Pro Bowler suffered an ankle injury in the Week 1 loss to the Cowboys and is "week to week," according to head coach Kevin Stefanski.

The free agent: C.J. Uzomah

He's 31 now, but longtime Bengal C.J. Uzomah hit almost 500 yards while scoring five touchdowns in 2021 and was still active with the Jets the last two years.

Cleveland has reportedly already hosted Irv Smith Jr., Tommy Sweeney and Geoff Swaim, but those guys are a lot less accomplished and the 0-1 Browns can't mess around here.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The injury: S Antoine Winfield Jr. (ankle)

An ankle injury could cost the first-team All-Pro several weeks of action for a Buccaneers team that doesn't have much margin for error based on a tough early-season schedule and an overall lack of talent compared to fellow NFC contenders.

The free agent: Rudy Ford

The secondary is pretty banged up, which could see the Bucs bring back safety Ryan Neal, but he struggled mightily as Winfield's partner in 2023, so taking a shot at Ford makes more sense.

It's not encouraging that the 29-year-old didn't stick with the Panthers this summer, but he does have five interceptions since the start of 2022 and is a better short-term positional replacement for Winfield.
