College Football 2024: Week 3 Predictions for Every Game

David Kenyon

Oh, we're in the regular season now.

After a few notable results to begin the 2024 campaign, last Saturday started to bring the chaos. Texas' win over Michigan and Notre Dame's shocking loss headlined a slate in which six ranked teams lost, causing a hefty shake-up in the AP Top 25 entering Week 3.

On paper, it's a pretty tame slate. The lone ranked clashes are between Arizona and Kansas State on Friday night and Boston College's trip to Missouri on Saturday afternoon.

But if Week 2 was any indication, there are upsets lurking.

Along with a preview of each Top 25 team, we've predicted every game involving a Football Bowl Subdivision program.

AP Nos. 25-21

Dylan Raiola Steven Branscombe/Getty Images

No. 25 Northern Illinois (2-0), Idle

No. 24 Boston College (2-0) at No. 6 Missouri (2-0), 12:45 p.m. ET

For prediction, see No. 6 Missouri.

Northern Iowa (2-0) at No. 23 Nebraska (2-0), 7:30 p.m. ET

That sound you hear is a Huskers Hype Train starting to pick up speed. Northern Iowa is consistently a competent FCS team, but the idea of going into Memorial Stadium against an ascending NU program and pulling of a stunner seems far-fetched.

Prediction: Nebraska 39, Northern Iowa 13

No. 22 Clemson (1-1), Idle

No. 21 Iowa State (2-0), Idle

AP Nos. 20-16

No. 20 Arizona (2-0) at No. 14 Kansas State (2-0), Friday, 8 p.m. ET

For prediction, see No. 14 Kansas State.

No. 19 Louisville (2-0), Idle

No. 18 Notre Dame (1-1) at Purdue (1-0), 3:30 p.m. ET

"This is the prototypical context of a letdown game," I wrote last week, "so perhaps Notre Dame trudges out to a slow start." That happened, but the Irish failed to recover and pull away from Northern Illinois as I anticipated. I'm not panicked about ND because its defense will typically be the best unit on the field, but Riley Leonard and the offense are clearly a work in progress.

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, Purdue 17

Arkansas State (2-0) at No. 17 Michigan (1-1), Noon ET

Similar story at Michigan, where an overhauled offense couldn't threaten Texas' defense in a blowout loss. Arkansas State likely won't be able to manipulate U-M's defense as much, but Michigan's quarterback issues lead me not to rush toward a lopsided, comfortable win.

Prediction: Michigan 27, Arkansas State 13

No. 16 LSU (1-1) at South Carolina (2-0), Noon ET

Talk about a tale of two games, man. South Carolina needed a clutch defensive play to escape Old Dominion at home and then traveled to Kentucky and steamrolled the 'Cats. Make it make sense! I'll lean LSU's way because of its talent edge, but that's not a confident pick.

Prediction: LSU 26, South Carolina 21

AP Nos. 15-11

Tulane (1-1) at No. 15 Oklahoma (2-0), 3:30 p.m. ET

If you're an Oklahoma fan and feeling a little concerned, I don't blame you. Tulane gave Kansas State a 60-minute fight last week as OU struggled to separate from Houston, which previously lost to UNLV by 20 points. Oklahoma is certainly the favorite here, but Tulane is built to make it uncomfortable for the Sooners.

Prediction: Oklahoma 33, Tulane 20

No. 20 Arizona (2-0) at No. 14 Kansas State (2-0), Friday, 8 p.m. ET

Key note: This is not a conference game because the schools had agreed to the matchup well before the latest wave of realignment moved Arizona into the Big 12. Still, the winner will pocket a quality victory for a hopeful College Football Playoff resume. I'm inclined to go with K-State at home, although the variance of both teams—in a two-game sample, but variance nonetheless—likely hasn't inspired much confidence in either fanbase.

Prediction: Kansas State 30, Arizona 27

No. 13 Oklahoma State (2-0) at Tulsa (1-1), Noon ET

I'm a huge fan of power-conference schools traveling to Group of Five in-state opponents. It doesn't happen often, but I appreciate when it does. I promise that's not simply a nicety in advance of picking an Oklahoma State rout, even as that's where I believe this is headed.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 48, Tulsa 24

No. 12 Utah (2-0) at Utah State (1-1), 4:30 p.m. ET

Copy and paste the above section. The status of Utah quarterback Cameron Rising (finger) is still unknown, and the offense may have a few issues if he's unable to play. The prediction is based on Rising being available, but trim the margin if the Utes don't have their QB.

Prediction: Utah 38, Utah State 14

No. 11 USC (2-0), Idle

AP Nos. 10-6

Ball State (1-0) at No. 10 Miami (2-0), 3:30 p.m. ET

Notre Dame's loss to NIU should serve as a timely reminder for these kind of matchups. At the same time, Miami has played so well in the first two games that an upset hardly looks possible at all.

Prediction: Miami 45, Ball State 14

No. 9 Oregon (2-0) at Oregon State (2-0), 3:30 p.m. ET

On the other hand, Oregon floundered past Idaho and barely held off Boise State. There are real concerns—albeit of moderate worry at most—about the Ducks heading into this rivalry game. I still believe Oregon can be dominant if the proverbial switch flips, but we need to see it happen.

Prediction: Oregon 34, Oregon State 20

No. 8 Penn State (2-0), Idle

Kent State (0-2) at No. 7 Tennessee (2-0), 7:45 p.m. ET

Last weekend, Kent State fell to lower-division St. Francis (PA). May the football gods have mercy on their souls in Knoxville.

Prediction: Tennessee 59, Kent State 7

No. 24 Boston College (2-0) at No. 6 Missouri (2-0), 12:45 p.m. ET

After knocking off Florida State on the road, Boston College blanked Duquesne to earn its first AP Top 25 appearance in six years. Now, can the Eagles solve Missouri's defense? Murray State and Buffalo combined for 254 yards and zero points in the opening two weeks. Boston College is obviously a much higher level of competition, but Mizzou deserves its spot as a hefty favorite at home.

Prediction: Missouri 33, Boston College 23

No. 5 Ole Miss (2-0) at Wake Forest (1-1), 6:30 p.m. ET

Wake Forest should at least provide a challenge for an Ole Miss defense that has locked down Furman and Middle Tennessee. Road games are traditionally where big upsets happen, too. I just cannot bring myself to believe that a balanced and explosive Ole Miss scoring attack won't figure out a way to score 40 points, though.

Prediction: Ole Miss 43, Wake Forest 27

No. 4 Alabama (2-0) at Wisconsin (2-0), Noon ET

Alabama had a pretty mediocre day against South Florida despite the lopsided final score. That would be more concerning for the Crimson Tide if Wisconsin's offense hadn't been so underwhelming in wins over Western Michigan and South Dakota.

Prediction: Alabama 34, Wisconsin 13

No. 3 Ohio State (2-0), Idle

UTSA (1-1) at No. 2 Texas (2-0), 7 p.m. ET

Texas State racked up 504 yards in a 49-10 smackdown of UTSA last weekend. So, yeah, you're probably not terribly optimistic about the Roadrunners' chances of keeping up with Texas, either.

Prediction: Texas 52, UTSA 7

No. 1 Georgia (2-0) at Kentucky (1-1), 7:30 p.m. ET

Kentucky only mustered 183 yards and six points in a loss to South Carolina. I shudder to think at what Georgia's defense could do against the 'Cats if their passing game doesn't show up again this weekend.

Prediction: Georgia 48, Kentucky 10
