Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete 2024 PPR Player Rankings Entering Week 2

Gary Davenport

It's that time of year when fantasy football is all extremes. Fantasy managers are either riding high or in the dumps. Undefeated or winless.

Welcome to Week 2.

Maybe things went swimmingly for you in Week 1. You watched Joe Mixon of the Texans gash the Indianapolis Colts in his Texans debut. Grinned as Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp tied a career-high with 14 catches. Piled up the points and rolled to a win.

Of maybe you glared at the TV set as Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. caught just one pass in his NFL debut. Glowered as Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had a very un-Kelce like game. Threw things when San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was scratched Monday evening.

However, whether you were the roller or the roll-ee, it's just one week. Get a win in Week 2, and it's back to .500. The same if you take a loss. So, it's time to put Week 1 in the rear-view mirror and get after it for Week 2, with position-by-position PPR rankings and a look at the top 100 players overall.

Quarterbacks

Baker Mayfield Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Raise your hand if you thought that Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be a top-five fantasy quarterback in Week 1.

Now put your hand down. That you could say that with a straight face is shameful. Mayfield's own mother had him on the bench, even in an excellent matchup with last year's worst-ranked defense. She rostered her kid, of course—but he was riding the pine.

After completing 80 percent of his passes for 289 yards with four touchdown passes against the Commanders, Mayfield is on the fantasy radar. Tampa's Week 2 matchup with the Detroit Lions isn't as favorable, but the Buccaneers will likely have to throw to keep up with Detroit's high-octane offense, and the Lions just surrendered a 300-plus yard game to Matthew Stafford of the Rams.

For fantasy managers who will be without Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers indefinitely after he injured his knee in Brazil, Mayfield may well be the best option available on many leagues' waiver wires.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (vs. TB) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

Like so many NFL quarterbacks, Goff's Week 1 numbers weren't great—217 yards and one touchdown through the air. Tampa's pass defense presents Goff with a second straight favorable matchup, as the Bucs were 29th in the league against the pass last year and gave up the eighth-most fantasy points to quarterbacks last season.

Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals (vs. LAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

Murray's numbers against the Buffalo Bills weren't great—162 passing yards, 57 rushing yards and a single touchdown—but this week's matchup with the Rams should be better. The Rams struggled defensively at times in Week 1 against the Lions, and the team was fourth in fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks in 2023.

BAD MATCHUPS

Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (at KC) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,300]

The Bengals offense was a hot mess last week against the New England Patriots. Ja'Marr Chase is rusty, Tee Higgins missed Week 1 with a hip injury and Burrow ranked outside the top 25 quarterbacks in fantasy points last week. Frankly, it may take garbage time for Burrow to have serviceable numbers in a game that could get out of hand early.

Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers (at CAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,800]

Some fantasy managers may be tempted to roll Herbert out there after Derek Carr of the New Orleans Saints smoked Carolina's defense in Week 1. But the Panthers were quietly one of the NFL's best pass defenses a season ago, and if Week 1 was any indication, the Chargers are going to rank closer to the bottom of the league in pass attempts than the top.

SLEEPER

Daniel Jones, New York Giants (at WAS) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,300]

Yes, that Daniel Jones. No, I haven't suffered some sort of head trauma. Jones was admittedly a disaster Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. But the Commanders had the worst defense in the league in 2023 and just got roasted by Baker Mayfield and the Bucs. If Jones can't get going against Washington, then New York should just turn back to Danny DeVito under center.

Yes, I know it's Tommy. Let me have some fun. It was a rough Week 1.

Running Backs

De'Von Achane David Rosenblum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

There were quite a few NFL backfields shrouded in uncertainty entering the season. One game isn't a large enough sample size to make definitive statements about those backfields. But we did gain some clarity—much to the chagrin of a certain fantasy analyst who shall remain nameless.

In Miami, with Raheem Mostert banged up, the Dolphins backfield is the De'Von Achane show now. Sunday against the Jaguars, Achane logged 17 touches compared to just eight for Mostert, and the latter has already been ruled out for Week 2. Of course, Achane himself is questionable with an ankle injury, so Miami's backfield is very much in flux headed into Thursday's matchup with the Bills. There was a surprise for Jacksonville as well—Tank Bigsby had the same number of carries (12) as Travis Etienne.

In Cincinnati, the shared backfield really wasn't. Chase Brown had just six touches for 23 yards despite the Bengals playing from behind. Najee Harris dominated the backfield work for the Pittsburgh Steelers, although that could be in part due to Jaylen Warren working his way back from injury. J.K. Dobbins had one fewer carry than Gus Edwards for the Chargers, but he was exponentially more productive, logging 135 rushing yards on just 10 carries. Tony Pollard had four times as many carries as Tyjae Spears for the Tennessee Titans.

Oh, and Christian McCaffrey of the San Francisco 49ers was a surprise scratch Monday night, leaving more than a few fantasy managers staring at a big fat zero in their lineup.

Other than that, though, everything went exactly as we expected.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots (vs. SEA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

Stevenson was big for the Patriots in their Week 1 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, carrying the ball 25 times for 120 yards and a score. The Seahawks looked better against the run in Week 1 than a season ago, but we're still talking about a defense that surrendered 138.4 yards per game on the ground last year and the fifth-most PPR points to running backs.

Kyren Williams, Los Angeles Rams (at ARI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,800]

Williams had a relatively quiet Week 1, although a rushing score salvaged his fantasy line. Expect there to be more room to run this week against the Cardinals, as Arizona was dead last against the run last year, allowing 143.2 yards per game. The team also gave up over 28 PPR points per game to the running back position.

BAD MATCHUPS

James Conner, Arizona Cardinals (vs. LAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

Conner's Week 1 numbers against the Buffalo Bills were decent, and the Rams were just gashed for 163 yards on the ground by the Detroit Lions. But the Lions run the ball well against just about anyone, and the Rams didn't allow many PPR points to running backs in 2023—only the Lions gave up fewer to the position.

David Montgomery, Detroit Lions (vs. TB) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000]

Montgomery was solid in the season opener, flirting with 100 total yards and scoring the game-winning touchdown. But the Buccaneers have long been a stout defense against the run, especially up the middle. This matchup sets up better for Jahmyr Gibbs to have success on the edge than Monty going at the heart of the Tampa defense.

SLEEPER

Gus Edwards, Los Angeles Chargers (at CAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200]

Yes, Edwards' per-carry numbers paled compared to Dobbins last week against the Raiders. But if Carolina's blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints is any indication, everyone gets to eat against the Panthers. For what it's worth, Jamaal Williams of the Saints had 51 total yards and a score in Week 1 as the complement to Alvin Kamara in New Orleans.

WEEK 2 RUNNING BACK RANKINGS

1. Breece Hall, NYJ (at TEN)

2. Saquon Barkley, PHI (vs. ATL)

Wide Receivers

Brandon Aiyuk Ryan Kang/Getty Images

It would be nice if we could have nice things in fantasy football. But if you have been playing this game for any length of time, you know that rarely happens. Just two weeks into the fantasy football season, the wide receiver position is already being hit by injuries.

The biggest so far is actually a continuation of an injury from training camp, as Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams aggravated his knee injury in the season opener against the Detroit Lions. Nacua is headed to injured reserve and will miss at least the next four games.

In addition, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals missed the team's loss to the New England Patriots with a hip injury, and his status for Sunday's showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs is shaky at best.

Injuries are a part of fantasy football. But getting blasted by them right out of the gate is still a punch in the gut.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco 49ers (at MIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,500]

Aiyuk lost most of training camp and the preseason to a contract dispute, but he has a game under his belt and gets a Minnesota Vikings defense in Week 2 that ranked 23rd in the league against the pass last year. Minnesota had a good defensive effort in the season opener, but in Week 2 they have to face an actual NFL quarterback.

Marvin Harrison Jr., Arizona Cardinals (vs. LAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,900]

Harrison might as well have been injured against the Buffalo Bills—the highly touted rookie caught all of one pass for four yards in his professional debut. But you have to think the Cardinals are going to make a concerted effort to get Harrison more involved against a Los Angeles Rams team that was just roasted by another young speedster in Jameson Williams of the Lions.

BAD MATCHUPS

Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints (at DAL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

This is the last thing Olave managers want to see after he was left out of New Orleans' 47-point explosion last week against the Panthers. But the Cowboys were dominant defensively last week in Cleveland, and Dallas surrendered the sixth-fewest PPR points to wide receivers a year ago. Olave might actually be a good "buy-low" candidate in Week 3. But Week 2? Pass.

Calvin Ridley, Tennessee Titans (vs. NYJ) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,800]

Ridley led the Titans in targets last week in Chicago, but his 3/50/0 stat line on seven looks doesn't inspire a ton of confidence in his prospects moving forward, especially with Sauce Gardner and a Jets team on tap that surrendered the fewest PPR points to wide receivers in 2023. This just goes to show that quarterbacks who put mayonnaise in coffee cannot be trusted.

SLEEPER

Wan'Dale Robinson, New York Giants (at WAS) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,300]

The Giants offense was a disaster last week against the Minnesota Vikings, but Robinson quietly paced the team with 12 targets and hit double digits in PPR points. The Commanders were just carved up by Baker Mayfield in Week 1, and last season Washington fielded the worst pass defense in the entire National Football League.

Tight Ends

Isaiah Likely Christian Petersen/Getty Images

It's not especially surprising to see a tight end from the Baltimore Ravens listed among the highest scorers at tight end in fantasy football. However, we have become accustomed to that tight end being Mark Andrews.

But while Andrews was healthy and out there Thursday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, it was Isaiah Likely who posted the huge stat line. Likely had nine catches for 111 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, and he was millimeters from scoring a second time at the end of the game.

The huge outing has made Likely a very popular target on fantasy waiver wires, and it's possible we're witnessing a changing of the guard at the position in Baltimore. Likely has the athleticism and ability to stretch defenses that Andrews doesn't at this point in his career, which has been marred by multiple significant injuries.

Still, it's premature to start tossing dirt of Andrews' fantasy value, and while Likely is inside the top-10 tight ends for the week, Andrews is still ranked higher.

What? I'm old and resistant to change.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs (vs. CIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

On some level, it's ridiculous to have to point out that Travis Kelce has a good matchup—for years, every matchup Travis Kelce had was a good one. But his pedestrian Week 1 numbers have many panicked fantasy managers wondering if Taylor Swift has sapped him of his fantasy superpowers. Kelce will be fine. Take a breath. Listen to The Tortured Poet's Department.

Trey McBride, Arizona Cardinals (vs. LAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000]

McBride's five catches for 30 yards didn't win any weekly matchups in Week 1, but it's worth noting that his nine targets led the team. Now he and the Cardinals face a Los Angeles Rams team that allowed the sixth-most PPR points to tight ends a year ago. Look for Arizona's passing game to get untracked in the home opener.

BAD MATCHUPS

Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. CLE) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400]

Engram's 2024 debut wasn't at all what fantasy managers were hoping for—one catch for five yards on four targets against the Dolphins. That slow start could easily extend into a second week—the Browns had the NFL's best pass defense last year and Cleveland surrendered the second-fewest PPR points to tight ends.

George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers (at MIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,500]

Kittle's not the sort of tight end that fantasy managers sit in a bad matchup. But while the Vikings weren't a good team against the pass last season, they didn't allow a lot of PPR points to tight ends—20th in the league. This could just be a week where expectations need to be tempered for the 30-year-old.

SLEEPER

Pat Freiermuth, Pittsburgh Steelers (at DEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,100]

The Steelers' passing attack was stuck in neutral for most of last week's win over the Broncos, and Freiermuth was no exception—although he was second on the team in targets with four. He could see a heavy workload Sunday in Denver with Pat Surtain blanketing George Pickens, and the Broncos led the league in PPR points given up to tight ends in 2023.

WEEK 2 TIGHT END RANKINGS

1. Sam LaPorta, DET (vs. TB)

2. Travis Kelce, KC (vs. CIN)

3. Dalton Kincaid, BUF (at MIA)

Kickers and Defenses

Tyrique stevenson Ben Hsu/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Sunday in Chicago, the Bears accomplished something that had been done three times in 1,228 tries in the Super Bowl era—they won a game in which they trailed by 17 points without scoring an offensive touchdown.

The Bears scored a pair of non-offensive touchdowns, however, with one coming on a blocked punt and the other on an interception return. In news that should surprise exactly zero people, that effort got the Bears defense to the top of the leaderboard in many fantasy leagues.

Now, this doesn't suddenly make the Bears a weekly starter defensively—Chicago is an improved defensive team, but starting them this week in Houston is a lot different than at home against a Titans offense that struggled mightily to move the ball in Week 1.

We did learn, however, that if the opening week of the season was any indication, the Titans are a matchup to attack for fantasy managers who like to stream the position.

And the New York Jets defense should be set up well for a solid stat line in Week 2.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Greg Zuerlein, New York Jets (at TEN)

The Titans aren't just a favorable matchup for team defenses—no NFL team gave up more fantasy points to kickers last season than Tennessee. Bears kicker Cairo Santos kicked three field goals in Week 1 against the Titans, so "Greg the Leg" should be a quality fantasy start in Week 2.

Los Angeles Chargers Defense/Special Teams (at CAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,400]

The Chargers played a solid game defensively in their Week 1 win over the Raiders, holding Las Vegas to 10 points, sacking Gardner Minshew four times and forcing three turnovers. The Carolina Panthers allowed the fourth-most fantasy points to kickers during last year's 2-15 debacle, and the team didn't look an iota better last week in New Orleans.

BAD MATCHUPS

Evan McPherson, Cincinnati Bengals (at KC)

The Cincinnati Bengals were all kinds of out of sorts last week against the New England Patriots, and even if they get untracked, the Bengals aren't beating the defending champions at Arrowhead by kicking field goals. The Chiefs were also dead last in the league last year in fantasy points given up to kickers.

Dallas Cowboys Defense/Special Teams (vs. NO) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,000]

If you drafted the Cowboys as an every-week starter defensively, you aren't sitting them at home against the Saints—especially after they drilled the Browns in Cleveland ago. But while the Saints are hardly an offensive juggernaut, the team wasn't an especially good matchup for defenses in 2023, and Klint Kubiak's debut as offensive coordinator last week went about as well as it possibly could.

SLEEPER

Washington Commanders Defense/Special Teams (vs. NYG) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,000]

This is the epitome of a matchup play. The Commanders were last in the league in defense last year and just got 37 dropped on them by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But if you watched the New York Giants get shelled at home by a mediocre Vikings team last week, you know that they may be the worst offense in the NFL.

Top 100 Players Overall/"Flex" Rankings

Amon-Ra St. Brown Gregory Shamus/Getty Images

Before we get to the top 100 players overall for Week 2 in PPR fantasy football leagues (a list that can help with "flex" lineup decisions), it's weekly admonition time.

First, as always, there are no quarterbacks listed here. If your fantasy league has a "superflex" spot and you have a viable QB2, he should be in that spot.

Please note—Daniel Jones of the Giants is not a viable QB2. Or a viable QB4.

Second, there are no doubt plenty of frustrated fantasy managers after Week 1. Half of them, in fact. It was a rough week, filled with choppy play and capped off with the first overall pick in most drafts being a late scratch.

No one wants to start a new season by taking a loss. But it's just that—one loss. This analyst's career record in Week 1 is...depressing. But about seven in 10 of my teams make the playoffs. Win my share of championships. And that's in part because I don't panic.

Hit the waiver wire and improve your team. Float a trade offer or two. And take a breath—many of the players who disappointed in the opener will turn it around in Week 2.

It's a long season. And one week isn't going to define it.
