1 Change Each NFL Week 1 Losing Team Must Make to Avoid 0-2 Start

Alex Kay

Starting a new NFL season with a loss isn't ideal, but dropping one game is no reason to panic. Suffering two consecutive defeats to open the year is far more concerning, however, as history is not on the side of teams that start the year 0-2.

Since the start of the 2002 campaign, seven eventual Super Bowl winners—including the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs—dropped their Week 1 contest before going on to win it all that same year. Only one of these teams (the 2007 New York Giants) began the year with back-to-back defeats.

Although 15 teams inevitably took a loss over the first weekend of the 2024 season, there's still time for most of them to correct things and get back on track. It's imperative these clubs make adjustments quickly, as they could be facing a lost year before September has even reached its midpoint if they get another "L" on the books.

With that in mind, here is one adjustment each 0-1 team must make to get back to .500 in Week 2.

Week 1 Result: 26-20 overtime loss to Detroit Lions

Change Needed: Get the Backup Running Backs Involved

The Los Angeles Rams hung tough with the Detroit Lions in the season's first Sunday Night Football contest, but they ultimately fell short in overtime after allowing an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive.

While quarterback Matt Stafford fared decently well in the contest—going 34-of-49 for 317 yards and a score—he didn't have enough support from the ground game. Kyren Williams led the team with a concerning 50 yards on 18 carries, and while he found the end zone on one of those rushes, his 2.8 yards per carry average won't help the Rams win many games.

Considering Los Angeles expended a third-round pick on Blake Corum, it was rather shocking to see the rookie back fail to log a single snap in Week 1. Ronnie Rivers worked as the primary backup to Williams but garnered a meager two totes (which did go for an efficient 16 yards) and was on the field for just seven offensive plays in total.

Williams may have been one of the league's best backs when healthy last year, but he'll need to show he can repeat that feat quick before head coach Sean McVay considers making a change. Rivers showed some spark in limited action and Corum has plenty of upside, making them candidates to start seeing more action if L.A.'s rushing attack falters early in Week 2.

Washington Commanders

Week 1 Result: 37-20 loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Change Needed: Have Jayden Daniels Throw More

The Washington Commanders started out what is likely to be a trying season with a 17-point loss. While defeats will be a common sight in the nation's capital this season, the debut of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels was at least promising.

The No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 draft showed franchise potential by completing 17-of-24 passes for 184 yards and rushing 16 times for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

While Daniels did fumble three times, he did well to avoid turning it over and could build on that interception-less performance going forward. Washington shouldn't hesitate to dial up more passes for their young quarterback now that he's shown he can sling it with accuracy at the professional level.

Cleveland Browns

Week 1 Result: 33-17 loss to Dallas Cowboys

Change Needed: Play to Deshaun Watson's Strengths

The Cleveland Browns just opened the year with a humbling loss despite having Deshaun Watson back under center for the first time since Week 10 of last season.

While the Browns had the league's best defense last year and made a surprise playoff run with Joe Flacco leading the way after being signed off the street, the team struggled to contain the Dallas Cowboys and couldn't get much going offensively to start off the 2024 campaign.

Watson's ability to throw deep appears to be compromised because of a string of injuries in recent years. The quarterback failed to complete a single throw beyond 10 yards in the first half and finished the game with just 169 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions on a 53.3 percent completion rate.

The Browns won't have an easy time winning without the deep ball in their arsenal, but adjusting the offense to focus on runs and the passes Watson can still make should at least move the chains a bit more reliably while avoiding costly turnovers.

Las Vegas Raiders

Week 1 Result: 22-10 loss to Los Angeles Chargers

Change Needed: Make Better Coaching Calls

The Las Vegas Raiders aren't expected to contend in 2024 after failing to acquire a franchise quarterback this offseason. While Gardner Minshew II can manage the game at a decent level if the talent around him is suitable, he's not going to be able to lift this team enough to overcome poor coaching decisions like the ones Antonio Pierce made during Sunday's loss to the rival Chargers.

Pierce made an extremely questionable call to punt the ball despite facing a fourth-and-one from L.A.'s 43-yard line while trailing 16-10 midway through the fourth quarter.

While the Raiders did push the Chargers back to their own eight, the Bolts ripped off a 92-yard drive that slammed the door shut on Vegas' chances of coming back. Had Pierce gone for it instead and got the first before going on to score, the Raiders would potentially be 1-0 and in a much better spot right now.

Denver Broncos

Week 1 Result: 26-20 loss to Seattle Seahawks

Change Needed: Support Bo Nix

The Bo Nix era began about as expected when the Denver Broncos lost to the Seahawks on Sunday afternoon. While Nix showed plenty of promise while winning the starting job this offseason, the rookie signal-caller has a severe lack of talent surrounding him and has a long way to go before he's ready to take this organization back into contention.

That much was evident in the opener, when the No. 12 overall pick completed just 26-of-42 passing attempts for 138 yards and two interceptions. He did fare better with his legs—rushing for 35 yards and a touchdown on his five carries—but ultimately couldn't get the job done due to a lack of rushing support.

Nix ended up leading the team in rushing yardage after both Jaleel McLaughlin (10 carries for 27 yards) and Javonte Williams (eight carries for 23 yards) failed to even achieve a measly 3.0 YPC average in the opener. Audric Estime was the only efficient back for Denver, but the third-stringer only logged two totes despite gaining 14 yards with those limited carries.

While Nix does need to open things up by keeping defenses honest with his arm, the Broncos also have to find a way to win the battle in the trenches and establish the run to have any real chance at success.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Week 1 Result: 20-17 loss to Miami Dolphins

Change Needed: Improve Discipline

The Jacksonville Jaguars went from cruising to victory to having the wind knocked out of their sails in the span of a few plays during the third quarter of their eventual loss to the Dolphins in Week 1.

After being up 17-7 with a chance to put the game nearly out of reach with another touchdown late in the third, running back Travis Etienne fumbled into the end zone and gave Miami the ball instead of putting his team up another score. Miami then hit on what seemed to be an inevitable big play to Tyreek Hill for an 80-yard score, allowing the opposition to steal momentum and eventually score 13 unanswered points to take the game.

The Jags must be more disciplined and avoid these types of momentum-shifting, game-altering plays if they are going to return to the playoffs after a disheartening 2023 campaign. The team still looks good enough on both sides of the ball to be a contender in 2024 but can't afford to beat themselves with more mishaps if they want to salvage things in Week 2 and beyond.

Tennessee Titans

Week 1 Result: 24-17 loss to Chicago Bears

Change Needed: Avoid Costly Turnovers

The Tennessee Titans looked like they were going to handily spoil the professional debut of No. 1 overall draft pick Caleb Williams after building a 17-0 first-half lead, but the Bears took advantage of several late Tennessee mistakes to steal a "W" in Week 1.

While the Titans defense clamped down and allowed just 147 yards to Chicago's offense, Tennessee made a slew of critical errors in the back half on both offense and special teams. The most notable of which were a blocked punt that was returned for a score and both a fumble and pick-six from second-year QB Will Levis.

Chicago notably only committed one turnover while Tennessee's three ended up being the difference in this contest. The eight penalties and converting only 3-of-14 third downs surely didn't help, but turnovers were the main reason the Titans wound up losing by a touchdown instead of potentially blanking this foe.

Tennessee is a young team and mistakes are bound to happen, but this level of ineptitude is inexcusable and must be fixed for the team to have any chance to win.

Arizona Cardinals

Justin Casterline/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 34-28 loss to Buffalo Bills

Change Needed: Get Marvin Harrison Jr. in the Mix

The Arizona Cardinals were supposed to use Week 1 to show off the immense talents of Marvin Harrison Jr., the first non-quarterback taken in the 2024 draft at No. 4 overall. Instead the rookie saw just three targets and secured only one catch for four yards in a heartbreaking loss to the Bills.

While Harrison drew rave reviews for his offseason efforts—it seemed like every week there was a new report from camp that included glowing quotes from teammates and coaches—those didn't translate to on-field production in the first meaningful game of 2024.

The worst part was that the Ohio State product's pedestrian stat line would have been an afterthought had he played the role of hero with a game-winning touchdown in the waning moments. That should have happened too, as Harrison sprung free to get wide open with just over a minute left to play.

Quarterback Kyler Murray failed to spot a wide-open MHJ, however, and instead went to Greg Dortch for a small gain. The Cardinals failed to score on the drive and are now 0-1 instead of 1-0 with a statement victory over the Bills under their belt.

Harrison must be a bigger factor going forward. He's simply too talented to keep contained, and no team should be able to completely shut him down by clouding him in coverage. Arizona has to scheme better and get him more involved when the Rams come to town in Week 2.

Indianapolis Colts

Justin Casterline/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 29-27 loss to Houston Texans

Change Needed: Stop the Run

The Indianapolis Colts fought hard in a divisional rivalry game against the Texans, but they ultimately came up just short in the end. The team likely would have notched a "W" had it defended the run at a competent level.

The Colts allowed a whopping 213 yards on 40 carries in the contest, including letting aging running back Joe Mixon go off for 159 yards and a touchdown on a herculean 30 totes.

That performance marked the third-most rushing yardage Mixon has ever gained in a game and matched the most carries he's ever logged during his eight-year NFL career. One would have to go back to Week 12 of the 2021 campaign to find the last time Mixon had that many rushing yards, a concerning stat that should have Indianapolis fans worried.

Indianapolis gave up the most rushing yardage of any team in Week 1 and desperately needs to figure out how to win the battle in the trenches if it is going to right the ship. This team has the offensive talent to compete for a playoff spot but needs the defense to step up to realize that goal.

Atlanta Falcons

Todd Kirkland/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 18-10 loss to Pittsburgh Steelers

Change Needed: Get Kirk Cousins Settled

The Atlanta Falcons invested heavily into patching their most glaring hole this offseason by signing Kirk Cousins to a blockbuster four-year deal. The move was supposed to elevate the club to contending status, but after one week, the Falcons have more questions than answers.

Cousins looked abysmal during the team's disappointing defeat to the Steelers, completing just 16-of-26 throws for 155 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions. He was sacked twice and looked more immobile than usual following his recovery from a season-ending Achilles tear.

The veteran quarterback doesn't seem to be in sync with his pass-catchers, either. One of Cousins' interceptions occurred on a play Drake London seemed to give up on his route, and the other was a game-changing pick that took place late in the contest after Cousins failed to get any zip on the ball while being pressured trying to find a receiver.

While the offensive line wasn't great, it also can't be blamed much for allowing a T.J. Watt-led edge-rushing unit to harass the signal-caller. Cousins has to be getting the ball out faster and getting into a rhythm earlier.

It's understandable that the 35-year-old may not be back to 100 percent after being out for such a lengthy stretch, but Cousins is running out of time to put things together and must settle in before the Falcons' season is effectively over.

Cincinnati Bengals

Week 1 Result: 16-10 loss to New England Patriots

Change Needed: Knock the Rust Off

The Cincinnati Bengals just suffered what was arguably the most shocking loss of the opening slate. The team failed to get much of anything going offensively and could not find a spark in a disappointing defeat to the rebuilding Patriots.

While the Bengals are hoping to return to the league's upper echelon with Joe Burrow back in the fold after recovering from an injury that cut his 2023 campaign short, the superstar quarterback failed to impress in his return. It didn't help that top wideout Ja'Marr Chase—on the field despite failing to negotiate a contract extension—looked rusty as well after holding in throughout training camp.

Slow starts have been a common theme under head coach Zac Taylor—the Bengals fell to 1-10 in their first two games of seasons with him at the helm—and that trend continued in an ugly way on Sunday. Turnovers were a particular concern, including a goal-line fumble that cost the team a chance at scoring a touchdown in the first half of an opener for the first time since 2021.

It's not time to panic in Cincinnati just yet, however. The Bengals have bounced back from these situations before, including three years ago when they went to win the AFC Championship Game despite a 1-1 start and two years ago when they reached the conference title clash after an 0-2 start.

As long as the defense continues to play well, the Bengals should be able to figure out things offensively before it gets too late. They'll have another chance to show this is a top-tier unit when they visit Arrowhead to face off with the Kansas City Chiefs in a marquee Week 2 showdown.

New York Giants

Mitchell Leff/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 28-6 loss to Minnesota Vikings

Change Needed: Quarterback

The New York Giants appear to be hopeless with Daniel Jones at the helm. After an embarrassing loss at home against a Sam Darnold-led Vikings squad, the G-Men are now 22-37-1 in games the beleaguered signal-caller starts.

While Big Blue was celebrating their 100th season with many of the storied franchise's all-time greats on hand to witness the opener, they instead saw the team get booed off the field following some of the most uninspiring play of the Brian Daboll era.

Jones was particularly bad in the contest, completing just 22-of-42 throws for 186 yards and two interceptions. He's clearly not the answer under center and is out of chances to prove he can turn things around after six seasons.

It's time for Drew Lock to step up into the starting role and give the team a chance to play some better football.

Carolina Panthers

Chris Graythen/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 47-10 loss to New Orleans Saints

Change Needed: Keep Bryce Young's Confidence Up

The Carolina Panthers have every reason to panic after Year 2 of the Bryce Young era and the start of head coach Dave Canales' tenure began with a painful 37-point defeat to a divisional rival. After getting smoked by the Saints, the Panthers appear to be on the cusp of yet another lost season.

Starting 0-2 is to be expected now, even with a beatable Los Angeles Chargers opponent traveling across the country to square off with Carolina in Week 2. While the losses won't be pleasant, the Panthers still need to focus on salvaging Young's career and keeping his confidence up at this point.

Carolina has heavily invested into Young as their franchise quarterback and brought in Canales to assist with that endeavor. While it hasn't started off smoothly, there's still hope that the pairing can find success together at some point.

It looks like that may not be until 2025 at the earliest now, but it won't ever happen if Young continues to throw interceptions—he had two on Sunday—and take sacks (he was brought down four times in the opener) at a high rate. Carolina's coaching staff needs to take this humbling Week 1 loss and quickly learn from it to keep Young in contention to realize his potential.

Green Bay Packers

Wagner Meier/Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 34-29 loss to Philadelphia Eagles

Change Needed: Shield Malik Willis

The Green Bay Packers were dealt a crushing blow when it was revealed that star quarterback Jordan Love will miss up to a month after suffering a knee injury at the end of the team's opening week loss to the Eagles.

It was a worst-case scenario for the Packers, who spent much of the preseason witnessing what seemed like a lose-lose battle for the backup job between Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford. After both failed to distinguish themselves, the club opted to bring in Malik Willis via trade to work as Love's primary understudy.

Unfortunately for Green Bay, Willis is now being forced into action mere weeks after landing in Titletown. He struggled in his debut, failing to complete his only pass attempt and slipping in the dismal Sao Paolo field conditions to take a sack on the game's final play.

If the Packers are going to remain in contention while Love is sidelined, they'll need to build on the strong job they did establishing the run in Week 1. The new-look backfield led by Josh Jacobs found success to the tune of a collective 163 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries against Philly and will have to continue that type of output to grind out low-scoring wins over the next few weeks.

The Packers simply cannot afford to play from behind and put Willis in a position where he has to throw often to give the squad a chance. Willis has completed a mere 35-of-67 passes for 350 yards and zero touchdowns with three picks since entering the league in 2022 and simply isn't ready to carry this squad in any meaningful way.

Baltimore Ravens

Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Week 1 Result: 27-20 loss to Kansas City Chiefs

Change Needed: Get Derrick Henry in Rhythm

After years of underwhelming performances and injury woes within their backfield, the Baltimore Ravens had seen enough and finally made a splashy free agent signing to give their platoon a major boost. Unfortunately, Derrick Henry's first game with the organization left a bit to be desired.

Although Henry did put a touchdown on the board in the NFL Kickoff Game against the Chiefs, he only logged 13 carries and tallied a middling 46 yards on the ground. The veteran's 3.5 yards per carry average proves he never got a chance to wear down Kansas City's defense and pick up big chunks of yards in the second half, something he did to great effect throughout his Hall of Fame-worthy tenure with the Tennessee Titans.

Lamar Jackson once again paced the Ravens in rushing output, picking up 122 yards on his 16 totes. While that is certainly an impressive figure, Baltimore signed Henry to help take the heat off Jackson and he failed to do so in his debut.

Henry was also sparingly utilized in the passing game, seeing just two targets and failing to reel in either of them during the opener. While he's not an elite pass-catcher by any stretch, he started to get more involved in that aspect of the offense in his final Tennessee campaigns—putting up 612 yards on 61 receptions across the 2022-23 seasons.

The Ravens need to feed Henry more often going forward. He's a volume-based back who gets better as the game goes on. Limiting the star back's touches and barely utilizing him as a receiver won't allow Baltimore to unlock his true potential.
