4 Fights We Need to See After UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Brady

Tom Taylor

Sean Brady is closing in on a title shot.

The once-beaten welterweight picked up the biggest win of his career in the headliner of the UFC's latest event at the Apex in Las Vegas, defeating former title challenger Gilbert Burns by unanimous decision. Brady's win over the sixth-ranked Brazilian should set him up for a fight with one of the division's top dogs, and if he wins again, a title shot could be next.

Brazilian flyweight Natalia Silva also put herself in the running for a title shot in the co-main event, defeating former strawweight champ Jessica Andrade over three rounds for a unanimous-decision win of her own.

Among the other biggest winners of the night was streaking featherweight Steve Garcia, who picked up his fifth straight stoppage victory, blasting Canada's Kyle Nelson to a first-round TKO. He's not in his division's title conversation just yet but could definitely change that with another couple of wins.

Here's who we'd like to see Brady, Silva and Garcia fight next, as well as our pick for Gilbert Burns' next matchup.

Sean Brady vs. Ian Machado Garry

The UFC needs to get things moving at the top of the welterweight division.

There's a long list of fighters who seem to be in position for a crack at new champion Belal Muhammad. That includes former champions Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman, as well as an ever growing number of fresh contenders like Shavkat Rakhmonov, Jack Della Maddalena, Ian Garry, and now, Sean Brady.

Given the procession of fighters awaiting a title shot at welterweight, and the fact that Brady lost to Muhammad fairly recently, it's extremely unlikely he'll be next, even after a win over a former title challenger. He'll need at least another victory before it happens.

If he gets his way, he'll be looking for that next win against undefeated Irishman Ian Machado Garry.

Brady called Garry out after beating Burns, and while it might not be Garry's first choice, it makes sense for both of them.

Garry is riding a close decision win over Michael Page, which might have been enough to set him up for a title shot if the welterweight division were a little less crowded, but he's still seemingly behind Rakhmonov and Della Maddalena in the 170-pound pecking order.

Matching Brady and Garry up would make for an interesting style clash, and it would also make the winner one of the most deserving contenders for a crack at the belt.

Gilbert Burns vs. Michael Page

At this point, Gilbert Burns' days as a serious welterweight seem to be over. He's lost four of his last six fights to fresher, younger contenders in Sean Brady, Jack Della Maddalena, Belal Muhammad and Khamzat Chimaev.

That being said, Burns is unlikely to fall too far from his No. 6 perch at welterweight after his loss to Brady, and with a roster of dangerous training partners at Kill Cliff FC to keep him sharp, still seems like a tough test for most fighters in the division. He's bound to get another solid opponent in his next fight.

Our pick is England's Michael "Venom" Page.

Page, a former Bellator star known for his stunning—if rare—highlight-reel KOs, is riding a close decision loss to Ian Machado Garry. He may still be able to put himself in UFC title contention but is going to need a couple of impressive wins to make it happen. Beating a guy like Burns would be a great start.

It's a fight that could change a lot for both men, and it's a very interesting one on paper, as Page is one the division's most unpredictable strikers, while Burns is one of its top submission specialists.

Natalia Silva vs. Maycee Barber

After beating Jessica Andrade by decision in Saturday's main event, Brazilian flyweight Natalia Silva has won 12 straight fights—and many of those over very respectable foes. Much like Sean Brady at welterweight, she would probably be looking at a title shot if there weren't several other contenders ahead of her in the race, such as Manon Fiorot, Rose Namajunas and Maycee Barber.

That means that—much like Brady again—Silva is going to need to do a bit more work to earn her title shot.

We'd like to see her fight Maycee Barber next. Barber is riding six straight wins at flyweight, including victories over Jessica Eye, Amanda Ribas and Katlyn Chookagian, and much like Silva, would probably be looking at a title shot were Fiorot, Blanchfield and Namajunas not ahead of her in line.

It only makes sense to match these two rising contenders against each other. The winner will be firmly in position for a fight with whomever holds the title in the first half of 2025.

Steve Garcia vs. Calvin Kattar

Steve Garcia is on one of the best streaks in the UFC—and that's not an exaggeration.

The 32-year-old New Mexican featherweight has won five straight fights by stoppage, and every one of those wins came against decent opposition. Granted, it's not like he's been finishing former title challengers, but the guys he's beating aren't tomato cans, either.

His latest win came in the first round against Canada's Kyle Nelson—who missed weight for their fight. After that win, he deserves a big step up.

Nelson had been set to fight long-time featherweight contender Calvin Kattar until Kattar got injured. Garcia now deserves the opportunity Nelson was offered. He should be matched up with the No. 9-ranked Kattar at the earliest opportunity. The fight makes sense for both guys, and their shared striking skill and durability makes it an absolute Fight of the Night contender on paper.

Book it.
