Deion Sanders, Colorado Get 0 Votes in Week 3 AP College Football Poll 2024

The once-hyped Deion Sanders era at Colorado now includes five wins, nine losses and zero votes in the Week 3 Associated Press Top 25 poll.

While Colorado was in the "others receiving votes" category of the Week 2 poll with one vote, it did not receive a single vote in the newest edition of the rankings that were released Sunday thanks to a 28-10 loss to Nebraska.

The top of the poll still belongs to Georgia following its 48-3 victory over Tennessee Tech, while Texas and Ohio State round out the top three. Texas had arguably the most notable result of the Saturday slate with a 31-12 victory over the reigning national champion Michigan Wolverines on the road.

Colorado has plenty of work to do if it is ever going to join those teams in the rankings.

The Buffaloes' struggles along the offensive line were glaring during Saturday's game, as Nebraska sacked quarterback Shedeur Sanders five times and made him uncomfortable in the pocket throughout the evening.

"Protections were a problem," Deion Sanders told reporters. "You know, I'm trying to be polite and say it, because you know I can say the same thing you're thinking, but if I say it, you'd say I'm throwing my guys up under the bus. I'm not doing that whatsoever. Protections were a problem. We gotta figure out a way to prevent that and do a better job with that."

Sanders ended up 23-of-38 for 244 yards, one touchdown and one interception, which was a far cry from when he threw for 445 yards, four touchdowns and one interception in the season-opening five-point win over the FCS' North Dakota State.

Offensive line woes also impacted Colorado's running game, as the Big 12 team managed just 16 yards on 22 attempts.

It undercut a solid-but-unspectacular defensive effort, as the Buffaloes struggled out of the gate but didn't allow Nebraska to score a single point in the second half. Still, the game was never truly in doubt after intermission considering the Cornhuskers built a 28-0 lead in the first half.

Colorado will look to bounce back against in-state rival Colorado State in its next game. That might not be a straightforward win considering it needed double-overtime to defeat the Mountain West team last season, and things only get more challenging from there for Sanders' club once Big 12 play starts.

The Buffaloes will be tested with notable games against UCF, Kansas State, Arizona, Utah, Kansas and Oklahoma State and could be fighting for bowl eligibility as the season progresses.

At this point, the offensive line and overall depth of talented playmakers is a concern for a program trying to win more than five games for the first time since 2016. There are two of the game's biggest stars leading the way in Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter—who had 10 catches for 110 yards against Nebraska—but even they can only do so much against better competition given the overall roster construction.

And even better competition is waiting down the line this season.
