AP College Football Poll 2024: Complete Week 3 Rankings Revealed

Joseph Zucker

The newest AP Top 25 poll welcomed two new teams into the Top 10 thanks to losses from Notre Dame and Michigan that sent them tumbling down the rankings.

The Fighting Irish went from fifth to No. 18 after Kanon Woodill's 31-yard field goal lifted Northern Illinois to a 16-14 win. A 31-12 defeat to Texas, a game more one-sided than the final score would have you believe, caused the Wolverines to fall to 17th from 10th.

Texas made the strongest impression of any ranked team in Week 2. The Longhorns jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take the crowd out of it and then cruised in the second half.

Quinn Ewers threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns while the running game combined for 143 yards and one score on 28 carries.

Texas making the College Football Playoff last year was no mirage. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has built a serious national title contender in Austin.

On the other sideline, Saturday was a reality check.

Everyone knew Michigan lost a lot from last year's squad, yet the scale of the reset facing first-year head coach Sherrone Moore might have been overlooked.

Davis Warren was 22-of-33 for 204 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions, reinforcing the concerns about the state of the Wolverines' quarterback room. More surprising, their defense got pushed around by Texas.

Simply put, the Michigan team that showed up in Week 2 isn't good enough to make the playoff.

The same could be said for Notre Dame, which is beginning to display a familiar theme.

Northern Illinois head coach Thomas Hammock said in his postgame interview he told his players they wouldn't need luck to beat the Fighting Irish, and that proved to be the case. The Huskies held Notre Dame to 286 yards. On offense, they didn't turn the ball over as quarterback Ethan Hampton managed the game perfectly.

Notre Dame was a 28.5-point favorite and wound up being the second-best team on the field.

Putting head coach Marcus Freeman on the hot seat might be a stretch because there's no indication his job is in jeopardy. However, this isn't his first loss to a Group of Five opponent, and it appears dipping into the portal for a one-year stopgap at quarterback again isn't the solution.

"We've been here before, right? We've been here before," Freeman told reporters after the game. "Now it's time to get it fixed. We've got to get it fixed and get back to playing football the way we know how to play, we've played before, and we can, and we will."

That's not something you want to hear from a head coach in his third full season when he's referencing issues he hasn't exactly solved yet.

One saving grace for Michigan and Notre Dame within the context of mounting a CFP challenge is that some other contenders flattered to deceive in victory Saturday.

Oregon needed a last-second field goal from Atticus Sappington to beat Boise State. Penn State struggled to put away Bowling Green. Oklahoma only mustered 252 yards and 16 points against Houston. Even Alabama had its hands full with USF through three quarters before blowing the Bulls out in the fourth.

Further down the rankings, upsets for Kansas, Iowa and Georgia Tech lowered the odds they could sneak into the top 12 by season's end.

Texas, Georgia and Ohio State all look like strong favorites. Beyond that, the race for the other nine playoff bids could be wide open.
