Jets Rumors: Haason Reddick Ready to 'Die on This Sword' amid Contract Holdout

Mike Chiari

Veteran pass-rusher Haason Reddick is reportedly not expected to budge when it comes to his demands for a new contract.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, a source said Reddick has the "mindset that he will die on this sword," with regard to wanting a new deal before reporting to the New York Jets.

Russini added that it is considered a long shot for Reddick to play for the Jets in their season opener on Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers, and it remains unclear if he will report to the team at any point after that.

New York acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles back in March for a conditional 2026 third-round pick. Coincidentally, he was meant to replace Bryce Huff, who left the Jets for the Eagles in free agency.

However, 2024 is the final year on Reddick's contract, and he made it clear that he wanted a new deal before joining the team.

As a result, Reddick did not report throughout training camp or the preseason, and he remains a holdout with no signs of a resolution any time soon.

Russini noted that Reddick's representatives have been in contact with the Jets, but the Jets' stance is for Reddick to "show up, then we'll talk."

Reddick requested a trade last month, but the Jets released a statement in which they noted that they would not trade Reddick and informed him of their stance.

A Pro Bowler in each of his past two seasons, Reddick established himself as one of the league's top pass-rushers during his two seasons in Philly.

Reddick, who will turn 30 on Sept. 22, had a career-high 16 sacks in 2022 en route to finishing fourth in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting, and he followed it up with 11 sacks last year, which was good for his second straight Pro Bowl nod.

In 114 career regular-season games with the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers and Eagles, Reddick has 58 sacks, 69 tackles for loss and 16 forced fumbles to his credit.

The Jets could use that type of production, but even if he doesn't join the team, they may have enough talent to get by.

Jermaine Johnson was named a Pro Bowler in his second NFL season in 2023 by virtue of recording 7.5 sacks, while 2023 first-round pick Will McDonald showed flashes as a rookie with three sacks.

With or without Reddick, the Jets will have a tough test on their hands Monday when they go on the road to face the reigning NFC champion 49ers led by running back Christian McCaffrey, quarterback Brock Purdy, wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel, and tight end George Kittle.
