Christian McCaffrey, Justin Herbert NFL Injury Statuses and Fantasy Impact for Week 1

Joe Tansey

The top pick in most fantasy football drafts will be closely monitored over the next few days.

Christian McCaffrey was officially listed with a calf/Achilles injury on the San Francisco 49ers injury report this week.

McCaffrey was kept out of most of training camp with a calf injury, but he has been a participant at practice this week ahead of the Monday night clash with the New York Jets.

Justin Herbert was the other major injury concern for fantasy football players coming out of the preseason.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback will be ready for Jim Harbaugh's first game as the team's head coach on Sunday.

Below is a look at all of the major injury news that will affect Week 1 fantasy football matchups.

Christian McCaffrey On Pace to Play on Monday Night

McCaffrey was limited in practice on Friday, but there does not seem to be a ton of concern over his status for Monday night despite being listed with a calf/Achilles injury.

McCaffrey told reporters on Friday that there is no doubt in his mind he will play and said he hopes he'll get a normal workload in the season opener.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Thursday that McCaffrey would not take 100 percent of the snaps in practice, per Pro Football Talk, which led to the limited participant designation.

San Francisco is likely keeping McCaffrey away from a full workload in practice to have him at full strength for the contest with the Jets.

There are no indications coming out of San Francisco that the star running back will be absent for Monday night, which is what means most to fantasy football players.

McCaffrey might not be the top scoring running back in Week 1 because of the tough matchup against the Jets, but regardless, he is a must-start player every time he steps on the field.

Jordan Mason is listed as the 49ers backup running back. He will be a light pickup on the waiver wire.

If there are any concerns about McCaffrey's fantasy impact, the best move would be to start the other running backs on your roster on Sunday.

Justin Herbert To Start on Sunday

Justin Herbert was listed as a full participant on the Chargers injury report after dealing with a foot injury in preseason.

Herbert's injury is not the biggest concern you should have with the Chargers quarterback and his fantasy viability in 2024.

The Chargers have a bunch of question marks at wide receiver after the departures of Keenan Allen to Chicago and Mike Williams to the New York Jets.

Joshua Palmer, D.J. Chark Jr., rookie Ladd McConkey and second-year man Quentin Johnston make up the Chargers wide receiver corps.

Palmer is the only member of the quartet with a promising fantasy outlook, at least at the start of the campaign.

McConkey and Johnston are worth monitoring over the first few weeks to see how they are used in the offense.
