Time for WWE to Ramp Up the 'Bad Blood' in Time for Next Month's PLE

Chris Roling

WWE lacks a distinct aura of "bad blood" heading into the PLE of the same name at the start of October.

Luckily for the company, there's plenty of time to fix that.

This has popped up as a point to circle in red around WWE programming right now due to the events at Bash in Berlin on August 31.

There, the top championship matches on the brief card featured buddy-buddy stuff after the final results. In the opening match of the night, Cody Rhodes predictably retained his Undisputed title over Kevin Owens, only for the two to walk back down the ramp in each other's arms.

The main event wasn't any better in this regard. Gunther, also predictably, retained his still-new title over Randy Orton, only for the two to happily shake hands after the bout.

It left fans who seek a little more than best-man-win-offs wanting, to say the least.

There is something to be said for the fact that this newfound golden era pioneered by Triple H's hand doesn't need strict heels and faces in each feud. The fact Roman Reigns was a beloved, gaslighting heel and wasn't even on screen for his babyface turn while on a hiatus is a testament to this. Ditto for the very gray area that is Drew McIntyre vs. CM Punk right now.

And there's also the simple idea that Bash was just another WWE overseas show with an odd weekend start time, Eastern Standard in the United States. That potentially makes the company shy away from major title changes or even storyline and character progressions.

Still, this new era doesn't mean there shouldn't be quality babyface vs. heels feuds. And if something doesn't change soon, WWE runs the risk of "Bad Blood" not living up to its name in the same way older events like Hell in a Cell and TLC lost their luster because they either didn't live up to their namesake or the themed matches were just randomly tossed together.

This is especially apparent given the names involved, too. Fans know all too well what an amazing heel Owens can be and it sure feels like we're all just waiting for him to snap again.

One could argue that Rhodes' title reign desperately needs it, too. Most of his matches have boiled down to him agreeably welcoming all challengers for the sake of the sport and, for the most part, leaving things on good terms.

If Rhodes himself isn't going to go heel, then his reign really, really needs one for him to fight with that makes things extremely personal so he avoids John Cena accusations. Owens, undoubtedly, is the right man for the job.

And then there's Orton.

This meta, happy-to-be-back Orton has been a treat to watch and fan favorite, sure. But he's also the man formerly known as the Legend Killer, among other things. The handshake at the end of Bash felt a little forced and the fact there wasn't an RKO attempt despite what seemed like a smooth setup was surely a letdown for a percentage of fans.

There's a reason almost every single segment Orton's involved in feels like he could go heel. It's the past reputation, the natural feel of him as a heel and the constant teases, especially when he's been around Rhodes. Heck, "outta no where" is part of his thing, right?

The road to Bad Blood would be a nice time for Orton to revert back to his more natural-feeling ways. That doesn't mean take the title off Gunther, but get him on that track.

This might be useful down the road if WWE ever wants to shockingly get the title off Rhodes. Such a feud, given their personal history, would almost necessitate Orton being a heel. And he'd play a natural heel, to say the least, as a Legend Killer looking to retire John Cena in 2025.

At the end of the day, fans know all too well that Owens and Orton are two guys one should never, ever fully trust as babyfaces. Now they were both humbled overseas, shown they aren't good enough or are losing a step against the next generation. That should fuel some bad blood in their long-running characters, indeed.
