Roman Reigns Reacts to John Cena; WWE Rumors on Asuka's Contract, Giulia's NXT Debut

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

Reigns Agrees with Cena Calling him the GOAT

Roman Reigns isn't arguing with John Cena's assertion that The Tribal Chief is the greatest Superstar in WWE history.

During an appearance last month on Club Shay Shay with Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Cena praised Reigns and The Rock as the two greatest wrestlers ever, but gave Roman the nod over his cousin.

"[The] Rock would be second [greatest of all time] because [The] Rock did the same thing in the '90s but this is the one time I can say this, because [The] Rock is always No. 1," Cena said. "Roman's numbers have been better than Dwayne's."

Speaking this week at Bloomberg's Power Players event (Mukherjee), Reigns acknowledged Cena's comments and didn't disagree, saying:

"As far as what John said, you know, I kinda witnessed and observed his early reign being WWE's top guy and face of the company, so nobody knows better than everything that it takes to get to that point and be part of the conversation, so I guess I'm gonna have to agree with him."

Reigns arrived in WWE when Cena was in the middle of the most sustained run on top in the history of the company, and while it took some time, Reigns was eventually handed the proverbial torch.

A sizable portion of the WWE fanbase was resistant to Reigns getting pushed as a top star at first, but ironically it was a heel turn that seemed to make him a beloved figure among the WWE Universe.

Cena never turned heel once he became a babyface early in his WWE tenure, and while fans wanted to see what a villainous version of Cena would look like, it is difficult to argue with the results of him remaining a hero.

As for Reigns, the heel turn, partnership with Paul Heyman and formation of The Bloodline made him a bigger star than ever and made for some of the most compelling program in the history of pro wrestling.

After recently returning to WWE programming by attacking Solo Sikoa, it looks as though Reigns will be a face moving forward, and the heel run is the biggest reason why he will be able to succeed in that role now.

Also, to Cena's point, WWE is more profitable than ever thanks to television and streaming deals with Netflix, USA Network and The CW, and Reigns' status as the face of the company played a role in WWE getting those contracts.

So if the metric for the top wrestlers of all time is based primarily on drawing power, Reigns has to be in the conversation.

Details on Asuka's Reported New WWE Contract

Asuka is reportedly set to remain in WWE for the foreseeable future after reportedly agreeing to a new contract with the company.

According to PWInsider.com (h/t Mukherjee), exact details of Asuka's new deal aren't known, but it was described as a "long-term" agreement.

Per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlePurists), WWE recently approached several wrestlers whose contracts are set to expire in the coming months in the hopes of signing them to new deals.

Meltzer noted that Asuka was one of the Superstars who WWE attempted to re-sign, and the promotion succeeded in doing so.

Asuka, 42, signed with WWE in 2015 after a hugely successful career in Japan, and she has gone on to become one of the most decorated women's wrestlers in WWE history.

During her time in NXT from 2015 to 2017, Asuka won the NXT Women's Championship and went on an unprecedented winning streak. She parlayed that into a main roster call-up and won the inaugural women's Royal Rumble match.

The Empress of Tomorrow went on to become a four-time women's champion and four-time WWE women's tag team champion on the main roster.

Asuka last wrestled at Backlash in May when she and Damage CTRL teammate Kairi Sane dropped the women's tag titles to Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill.

She has been working her way back from an injury ever since and figures to resume her role as a key member of the women's division once she returns to action with a new contract in tow.

WWE Happy Internally with Giulia's Debut

Giulia made her WWE debut to a ton of fanfare last weekend during the NXT No Mercy premium live event by confronting NXT women's champion Roxanne Perez.

According to Meltzer (h/t Cultaholic's Aidan Gibbons), some in WWE were "very impressed" by Giulia's "presence" and the obvious star power she exuded.

Giulia did nothing other than stare Perez down at No Mercy, but the crowd popped huge for the Japanese performer, and there is little doubt that she instantly came off looking like a star and a big deal in NXT.

She provided fans with a little bit more during the main event segment of Tuesday's episode of NXT by interrupting a segment involving Perez and Chelsea Green.

Green surprisingly cut off Perez when most expected Giulia to do so, but Giulia made her entrance shortly thereafter and got physical for the first time in WWE, taking Green out with a knee.

Giulia also challenged Perez to a title match on the Oct. 1 edition of NXT, which is the debut episode of NXT on The CW.

That will presumably be Giulia's first match in WWE, and if she wins the championship, it will put her in elite company.

Given what she accomplished in Japan, Giulia was one of the top free agents in wrestling, and it appears WWE will waste no time in pushing its big acquisition to the top.
