Steph Curry Aims to Retire with Warriors After New Contract: 'I Hope So, for Sure'

After adding one more year to his contract earlier this offseason, Stephen Curry is closer to accomplishing his goal of spending his entire career with the Golden State Warriors.

Appearing on NBC's TODAY show (starts at 2:00 mark), Curry said "I hope so, for sure" when asked about finishing out his playing career with the organization that originally drafted him 2009.

Curry signed a one-year, $62.6 million extension with the Warriors on Aug. 29. The deal keeps him under contract through the 2026-27 season.

While the extension was a vote of confidence in Golden State's front office to build a championship-caliber roster around Curry, that group still has work to do to get them to that level.

The Warriors have been trying to find another superstar to pair with Curry. Paul George said on his podcast a deal that would have sent him to Golden State was "close to being done" before he ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Golden State reportedly attempted to acquire Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz before he agreed to a five-year, $238 million extension on Aug. 7. The date of the signing also ensures he can't be dealt until next offseason since the NBA's six-month trade restriction rule means the earliest he could be moved is Feb. 7—one day after the trade deadline for the 2024-25 season.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. could be keeping some of his trade options open.

Jonathan Kuminga is coming off a breakout season and is reportedly seeking a full max extension that would be worth $225 million over five years. He remains unsigned and could be used to help facilitate a trade during the season if the two sides don't agree to a long-term deal.

As long as the Warriors have Curry and he's still playing at an elite level, they will be under pressure to put him in position to compete for titles. The 36-year-old made the All-NBA team for the 10th time in his career last offseason after averaging 26.4 points and 5.1 assists per game in 74 starts.

Since winning the NBA championship during the 2021-22 season, the Warriors have just one playoff series win. They missed the postseason last year after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.
