Jorge Masvidal Hints at UFC Return; Eyes Michael Chandler, Leon Edwards Fights

Joseph Zucker

Jorge Masvidal is pursuing a return to the UFC on the heels of his loss to Nate Diaz inside a boxing ring in July.

Masvidal told MMA Fighting's Damon Martin he'd like to fight Michael Chandler or Leon Edwards:

The 39-year-old last entered the Octagon in April 2023, losing a unanimous decision to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.

It has been a long time since Masvidal's thrilling knockout of Ben Askren in 2019, a moment that propelled him to a new level of stardom.

In his next fight, he beat Diaz via TKO to win the symbolic "BMF," title, which he parlayed into a shot at UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Losing by unanimous decision to Usman was the start of a four-fight losing streak that led Masvidal's stock to steadily slide. As a result, it's hard to see where he fits into the picture with UFC.

In February, he told ESPN's Marc Raimondi he was already training with an eye toward another boxing match or a return to MMA. Months later, the situation doesn't appear to have changed much.

Opposing Chandler or Edwards in particular might be tough. Chandler has dropped three of his last four fights but is still the No. 6 challenger in the lightweight division. Edwards will probably want another crack at Belal Muhammad before too long after Muhammad dethroned him as welterweight champion at UFC 304 in July

Because he's still probably a name casual fans will recognize, UFC might be willing to bring Masvidal back for a major show. It's doubtful he'd be afforded a matchup of serious consequence, though.
