2024 College Football: Ranking Top 25 Quarterbacks After Week 1

Joel Reuter

Welcome to Bleacher Report's Top 25 college football quarterback rankings.

These rankings will again be a weekly feature published each Tuesday morning throughout the 2024 season, with the goal of identifying the 25 best QBs in the country each week as the season unfolds.

The only thing that matters here is on-field production in 2024.

That means past performance, future expectations, physical tools and NFL upside have all been removed from the equation.

Each quarterback's individual production and quality of opponent will be considered each week, and players will rise and fall based on where they ranked the previous week, so it will be a fluid process.

If your favorite team's quarterback is not currently on the list, fear not. If a guy is putting up numbers, he will find his way onto the list. On the flip side, a strong first week is only going to go so far if a player falls flat in Week 2 and fails to duplicate his early success.

Let the debate begin.

Nos. 25-21

Jackson Arnold Brian Bahr/Getty Images

25. Jackson Arnold, Oklahoma

Stats: 17-of-25, 141 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT; 34 rush yards

With four touchdown passes in a 51-3 shellacking of Temple, Arnold is off to a strong start in his first season as the Sooners' starting quarterback. The thing keeping him from ranking higher was his 5.6 yards per attempt, which ranked 106th among qualified QBs and lowest of anyone in the Top 25. He will get his chance to air it out as the season unfolds.

24. Behren Morton, Texas Tech

Stats: 30-of-42, 378 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT; -5 rush yards

It took overtime for Texas Tech to sneak past Abilene Christian in a 52-51 victory, and the Red Raiders defense could be in for a long season after giving up 615 total yards to an FCS opponent. However, that could also mean a big statistical season for Morton, who threw for 1,757 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago.

23. Tyler Shough, Louisville

Stats: 18-of-24, 232 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT; -10 rush yards

Now in his seventh year of college football after three-year stints at Oregon and Texas Tech, Shough got off to a strong start in a 62-0 dismantling of Austin. The Cardinals offense scored on six of its first seven possessions, and the quarterback should light it up again this weekend against Jacksonville State.

22. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State

Stats: 15-of-20, 247 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 44 rush yards, 1 TD

Sharpen threw for 5,574 yards and 36 touchdowns in three seasons at Baylor, including 2,188 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, before entering the transfer portal and replacing Will Rogers as the Bulldogs' starting quarterback. A road game against Arizona State will make for a tougher test on Saturday.

21. Payton Thorne, Auburn

Stats: 13-of-21, 322 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT; 49 rush yards, 1 TD

Thorne lit up the Alabama A&M defense for 15.3 yards per attempt in a 73-3 victory, though his completion percentage left a bit to be desired against an overmatched opponent. He also tallied 49 rushing yards and a score on the ground. And after racking up 515 rushing yards during the 2023 season, he is capable of being a dual-threat weapon.

Nos. 20-16

Nico Iamaleava Jacob Kupferman/Getty Images

20. Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati

Stats: 22-of-31, 383 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT; 5 rush yards, 2 TD

Sorsby had 1,587 yards with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions in 10 games at Indiana last year, and he wasted no time settling in as Cincinnati's starting quarterback. His 383 passing yards were a career high in a 38-20 victory over Towson, and he accounted for four total touchdowns while completing 71 percent of his passes.

19. Joe Labas, Central Michigan

Stats: 18-of-24, 342 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 1 rush yard

A 3-star recruit out of high school who spent the last two years at the University of Iowa, Labas landed at Central Michigan during the offseason and brought with him three remaining years of eligibility. It's worth taking his season-opening numbers at home against Central Connecticut State with a grain of salt, and he'll hit the road to take on FIU and Illinois the next two weeks.

18. Quinn Ewers, Texas

Stats: 20-of-27, 260 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT; -6 rush yards

Ewers didn't light up the competition the way some of his peers did in Week 1, but there's a good chance this will be the lowest he is slotted in these rankings all season. He was hit as he threw on his interception, and aside from that did pretty much everything right in a 52-0 win over a FBS opponent in Colorado State.

17. Kyle McCord, Syracuse

Stats: 27-of-39, 354 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT; -1 rush yard

McCord never lived up to lofty expectations at Ohio State, but he did throw for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing 65.8 percent of his passes last season. He no longer has Marvin Harrison Jr. to target down field, but his first start at Syracuse was a successful one as he threw for a career-high 354 yards in a 38-22 victory over Ohio. It will be interesting to see how his numbers stack up to new Buckeyes quarterback Will Howard as the season progresses.

16. Nico Iamaleava, Tennessee

Stats: 22-of-28, 314 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 6 rush yards

A 5-star recruit and the No. 3 player in the 2023 class, Iamaleava spent the year honing his game behind Joe Milton III last season, and the Tennessee offense is in good hands with him at the wheel if Saturday's 69-3 victory over Chattanooga is any indication. His 314 passing yards all came in the first half, setting a new school record for yardage before halftime, and he watched the second half from the bench.

Nos. 15-11

Ethan Hampton Michael Hickey/Getty Images

15. Ethan Hampton, Northern Illinois

Stats: 18-of-20, 328 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT; 8 rush yards

The beauty of casting aside things like preseason expectations in these rankings is that it gives us a chance to shine some light on an under-the-radar early standout like Hampton. Running back Antario Brown is expected to be the focal point of the NIU offense after rushing for 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago, but it was Hampton who shouldered the load in impressive fashion in a 54-14 win over Western Illinois. That early success will be put to the test against Notre Dame this weekend.

14. Chandler Morris, North Texas

Stats: 32-of-41, 415 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 17 rush yards, 2 TD

Originally an Oklahoma recruit who spent the last three years at TCU, Morris is now in his third collegiate stop and poised to put up big numbers in a North Texas offense that saw Chandler Rogers throw for 3,382 yards and 29 touchdowns last season. His 415 yards were the fifth-highest total of any FBS quarterback this past weekend in a 52-38 win over South Alabama.

13. Drew Allar, Penn State

Stats: 11-of-17, 216 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 44 rush yards

After averaging just 6.8 yards per attempt while serving largely as a game manager for the Nittany Lions a year ago, Allar nearly doubled that mark with 12.7 yards per throw on Saturday. He also did it while facing one of the better opponents of anyone in this list, as Penn State opened the season with a 34-12 win over West Virginia. Expect him to climb these rankings quickly if he continues to be more of a focal point of the offense.

12. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt

Stats: 12-of-16, 190 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT; 104 rush yards, 1 TD

Pavia won Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2023 when he threw for 2,973 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding another 923 yards and seven scores on the ground. He continued to make a major impact with his arm and his legs in a 34-27 upset against Virginia Tech in his first start at Vanderbilt, dispatching a popular dark-horse contender while showcasing his impressive skill set at the major conference level.

11. Miller Moss, USC

Stats: 27-of-36, 378 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT; -8 rush yards

Moss is the only quarterback in the Top 25 who did not account for multiple touchdowns this past weekend, but he was a major factor in USC's resume-building 27-20 victory over No. 18 LSU on Sunday. A 4-star recruit in 2021, he has put in his time in the Trojans program, and now he has a chance to be one of the best first-year starters in the nation.

Nos. 10-6

Cam Ward James Gilbert/Getty Images

10. Dillon Gabriel, Oregon

Stats: 41-of-49, 380 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT; -23 rush yards

One of the most accomplished passers in college football history, Gabriel completed 41 passes in a closer-than-expected 24-14 victory against Idaho on Saturday. His 380 passing yards brought him to 15,245 for his career and moved him ahead of Ty Detmer (15,031) into No. 7 on the all-time list. With 107 more yards this weekend, he will leapfrog Bo Nix (15,351), the man he replaced under center in Oregon.

9. Hudson Card, Purdue

Stats: 24-of-25, 273 yards, 4 TD, 0 INT; 16 rush yards

Card was nearly perfect under center for the Boilermakers on Saturday, picking apart the Indiana State secondary with 24 completions in 25 attempts. He had a quietly productive 2023 season, throwing for 2,387 yards and 15 touchdowns after transferring from Texas, and the former 4-star recruit has legitimate breakout potential in his second year in West Lafayette.

8. Noah Fifita, Arizona

Stats: 19-of-31, 422 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT; 10 rush yards

Arguably the biggest breakout quarterback of the 2023 season, Fifita picked up right where he left off with a loud 422-yard, four-touchdown showing in a 61-39 victory over New Mexico. The Wildcats were ranked in the preseason poll for the first time since 2015 and just the second time in the last 25 years, so he will face legitimate expectations after an upstart performance a year ago.

7. Shedeur Sanders, Colorado

Stats: 26-of-34, 445 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT; 17 rush yards

Sanders is no stranger to 400-yard passing performances, as he had a pair of them last season when he threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns against just three interceptions as one of the most hyped players in the country. It took everything the Buffaloes had to pull out a 31-26 victory over North Dakota State, and a road trip to take on Nebraska awaits this week in a game that will be a big test for a pair of programs under the microscope.

6. Cam Ward, Miami

Stats: 26-of-35, 385 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT; 33 rush yards

Ward tested the NFL draft waters before returning to the transfer portal and making the move from Washington State to Miami. He threw for 6,968 yards and 48 touchdowns in his two years with the Cougars, and he was impressive in his first start for the Hurricanes in a lopsided 41-17 victory on the road against the Florida Gators. Don't sleep on this Miami team in the College Football Playoff picture, especially if Ward plays up to his potential.

5. Carson Beck, Georgia

Mike Zarrilli/Getty Images

Stats: 23-of-33, 278 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT; 19 rush yards

Those numbers might not jump off the page, but Carson Beck faced one of the toughest Week 1 opponents of anyone on this list and cruised to a 34-3 victory against a Clemson team that entered the game ranked No. 14 in the AP poll.

The Bulldogs signal-caller claimed the No. 1 spot in our preseason rankings, and he figures to be a fixture in the Top 5 as the season progresses while also getting serious looks to be the first quarterback off the board in the 2025 NFL draft.

With last year's top target Brock Bowers now in the NFL, he spread it around on Saturday, completing a pass to nine different receivers.

4. Cameron Rising, Utah

Chris Gardner/Getty Images

Stats: 10-of-15, 254 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT; 25 rush yards

In his first game since January 2, 2023 when he faced Penn State in the Rose Bowl, Cam Rising showed no signs of rust while leading Utah to a 49-0 shutout against Southern Utah, though he barely had a chance to break sweat.

The seventh-year senior made his way to the bench in the second quarter after leading five straight touchdown drives, and it was a successful return to action on all accounts since a long road to recovery after tearing multiple ligaments in his knee in that Rose Bowl game.

The Utes face Baylor next weekend and then Utah State on the road before diving into conference play with tough matchups against Oklahoma State and Arizona in their first season in the Big 12.

3. John Mateer, Washington State

Alika Jenner/Getty Images

Stats: 11-of-17, 352 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT; 55 rush yards, 1 TD

Tasked with replacing an extremely productive Cam Ward after he transferred to Miami during the offseason, John Mateer kicked off his run as Washington State's starting quarterback with a bang by helping to hang 70 points on Portland State.

Now in his third season in the Cougars system, the 2022 3-star recruit beat out Bryant University transfer Zevi Eckhaus for the starting job this spring. And if Saturday's performance is any indication, there will be no quarterback controversy in Pullman.

Texas Tech comes to town on Saturday, and Mateer could put up huge numbers once again against a defense that surrendered more than 600 yards to FCS opponent Abilene Christian in Week 1.

2. Jalen Milroe, Alabama

Brandon Sumrall/Getty Images

Stats: 7-of-9, 200 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT; 79 rush yards, 2 TD

It took nine pass attempts, 10 carries and 38:30 of total game time for Jalen Milroe to rack up 279 yards and five touchdowns while helping Alabama build a 56-0 lead against Western Kentucky midway through the third quarter.

After finishing sixth in Heisman Trophy voting last year while throwing for 2,834 yards and 23 touchdowns and rushing for 531 yards and 12 more scores, he is now one of the faces of college football and the biggest reason the Crimson Tide are poised to bounce back from a disappointing 2023 campaign.

Milroe will square off against another terrific dual-threat quarterback in Byrum Brown this Saturday when Alabama welcomes South Florida to Tuscaloosa.

1. Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss

Justin Ford/Getty Images

Stats: 22-of-27, 418 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT; 27 rush yards, 1 TD

There are more than a few quarterbacks on this list who are going to have a tough time maintaining their Week 1 performance as the season progresses.

Jaxson Dart is not one of those guys.

The Ole Miss star threw for 3,364 yards and 23 touchdowns against just five interceptions last year, and his 9.4 yards per attempt ranked eighth among all qualified quarterbacks, so he is no stranger to elite-level production while playing a daunting schedule.

Expect him to continue to lay the foundation for a potential Heisman Trophy run against Middle Tennessee State this weekend before things start to get a bit more difficult.
