Prime Drops 'Evolution of the Black QB' Trailer, Release Date, Cast with Michael Vick

Joseph Zucker

Prime Video dropped a trailer for the upcoming documentary Evolution of the Black Quarterback on Monday ahead of its Sept. 24 release.

The eight-part series sees four-time Pro Bowler Michael Vick speak with past and present luminaries from the NFL to document the history of Black quarterbacks across the league.

SMAC Productions and Fubo Studios first announced the project in November 2022.

"I'm excited to be a part of this project because as a kid, I just wanted to have a shot at playing in the National Football League," Vick said. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be the first African American quarterback drafted No. 1.

"I know that was a big step for us in society. I was always told that I revolutionized the quarterback position, but I also like to give credit to the ones who I idolized as a kid and who paved the way like Randall Cunningham, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb. When you look at the evolution of the Black quarterback, it's because of the people that came before us. And now, I'm thankful for the dual threat concept that has changed the game for the better."

The Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts and Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott were among the active players interviewed for the series. Legendary QBs Donovan McNabb and Cam Newton also offered their insight.

For generations, Black quarterbacks were the victims of discrimination, which hindered their career in one way or another. When promoting his 2022 book Rise of the Black Quarterback: What it Means for America, ESPN's Jason Reid said people within the NFL thought "Black players were not smart enough to play the ultimate thinking man's position."

Warren Moon, who didn't debut in the NFL until he was 27 before embarking on a Hall of Fame career, offered a similar perspective in a 2020 interview with CNN's Calum Trenaman. He recounted the perception that Black players "can only play certain positions."

"And the quarterback position was the position that a lot of people didn't think we could play for different reasons, whether it was the leadership, whether it was being able to think, be able to make critical decisions at critical times," Moon said. "You know, be the face of a franchise, all those different things that go along with being a franchise quarterback."

The signs of progress are obvious. The Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson is a two-time MVP. Mahomes is universally regarded as the best QB in the NFL, and in 2023 he faced off with Hurts in the first Super Bowl to feature two Black starting quarterbacks.

Still, a 2023 investigation from SFGATE found evidence that "teams were chronically underrating Black quarterbacks in the draft" between 2010 and 2022. The outlet concluded that Black signal-callers were on average performing better than their peers, yet that wasn't reflected by where they were getting drafted.

A detailed docuseries such as Evolution of the Black Quarterback remains as timely as ever.
