Chiefs GM: We'd Trade for Kadarius Toney 'All Over Again' Despite 2024 Release

Jack Murray

The Kansas City Chiefs do not have any regrets about the 2022 trade for wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

The Chiefs released Toney prior to the 2024 NFL season, ending a tenure that consisted of some lackluster play from the 2021 first-round pick who the team traded a third-and-sixth-round pick for during the 2022 season.

While it was not a long-term solution for the Chiefs, general manager Brett Veach said that the trade was worth it due to Toney's contributions on the franchise's back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

"I don't think we're sitting here going for a third straight Super Bowl [championship] had we not made that trade,'' Veach said, per Adam Teicher of ESPN. "So, from that standpoint, we'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.''

Toney played in 20 total games for the Chiefs, making 41 catches for 340 yards and three touchdowns. A bulk of this production came during his seven games in 2022, and his 2023 season was derailed early by a meniscus injury.

His production with the Chiefs lagged behind what he did with the Giants but his steady performance in the 2022 postseason helped the Chiefs capture that season's Super Bowl and solidified some positive memories for Toney with the franchise.

As Toney looks for another chance to revitalize his career, the Chiefs will hope JuJu Smith-Schuster, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown can be strong headliners for Patrick Mahomes as the franchise seeks a third consecutive Super Bowl.
