Ethan Page Beats Joe Hendry to Retain NXT Title at No Mercy 2024

Ethan Page defeated TNA star Joe Hendry in a match with Trick Williams as a special guest referee to retain the NXT Championship at No Mercy on Sunday.

In the closing sequence, Page hit Hendry with a low blow behind Williams' back before connecting with his Ego's Edge finisher to continue his reign.

After the match, Williams was attacked by Pete Dunne, who he will face in a match on Tuesday's episode of WWE NXT.

Since the start of the working relationship between WWE and TNA back in late May, Hendry has had the most consistent presence of anyone from the TNA roster on NXT.

He made his WWE debut in a battle royal on the June 18 episode of NXT, and although he was eliminated quickly, he made a significant impact in a short amount of time that resonated with fans.

In lockstep with Hendry's rise to prominence in NXT was Page's, as he joined WWE on the same night Hendry competed in the battle royal on the heels of stints in TNA and AEW.

Remarkably, Page's first WWE match was an NXT Championship match against Williams at the Battleground premium live event, and although he fell short, he made winning the NXT title his obsession.

All Ego got another shot at the gold at Heatwave in July, competing in a Fatal 4-Way match against Williams, Je'Von Evans and Shawn Spears. During the match, Williams hit Evans with his finisher, but he got taken out and Page fell on top of Evans to pick up the pinfall victory.

After Page celebrated becoming NXT champion just over one month after debuting in NXT, a quick snippet of Hendry's face was seen to end the premium live event, which foreshadowed things to come.

Hendry returned to NXT on the July 9 episode, teaming with Williams to beat Page and Spears, which put him firmly on the path toward NXT title contention.

The Scottish star got his big break on the Aug. 20 edition of NXT, facing Wes Lee and Pete Dunne in a Triple Threat match for the NXT title No. 1 contendership, and Hendry was victorious.

On the go-home episode of NXT before No Mercy, general manager Ava announced that Williams would be the special guest referee for Page vs. Hendry, adding an intriguing wrinkle to the match.

Despite the issues between Page and Williams, Page retained his title Sunday, which could open the door for Trick to get the rematch he has been seeking.
