Malik Nabers will be wearing the number of a Hall of Famer when he takes the field for his rookie season.

The New York Giants revealed Wednesday the wide receiver was granted permission to wear No. 1 from the family of team legend Ray Flaherty. Flaherty's No. 1 was the first number to be retired in pro football history:

Nabers wore No. 8 at LSU and No. 9 during the preseason, but he is making the switch ahead of the regular season.

"Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants," he said in a statement. "I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. Can't wait for the season to start."

Flaherty played from 1927 to 1935 for the New York Yankees/Giants and was a three-time All-Pro selection. He also won an NFL title during the 1934 season.

He went into coaching after his playing career and led the Boston team, Washington team, Yankees and Chicago Hornets. He won two championships with Washington during a coaching career that went from 1936 to 1949.

Flaherty was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as part of the class of 1976 thanks to his coaching prowess.

As for Nabers, the Giants selected him with the No. 6 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft after he was a consensus All-American at LSU in his final season with 89 catches for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns.

It may be his rookie season, but it would be anything but surprising if he becomes New York's No. 1 wide receiver in his first year. If that becomes the case, the No. 1 is all the more fitting for the start of his NFL journey.
