B/R College Football 2024 Betting Locks: Week 0

Adam Kramer

At long last, there is football.

Not camps or scrimmages. Not realignment rumors or transfer portal declarations. No, the return of actual college football games has returned in the form of Week 0, a limited dress rehearsal for the season featuring games that matter.

No, this is not a full slate, but it doesn't matter. We'll take any and all games at the moment.

The return of college football also marks the official return of Locks of the Week, our weekly staple where we pick games against the spread all season. Results are tracked, winning picks are celebrated, and losing picks are mocked accordingly.

Regardless of how we do, we pick games every week until a national championship has been decided.

We normally pick anywhere from eight to 12 games. With few games to pick from, however, we're making the most of what we have right now. Trust us, it'll only escalate from this point forward.

With that, let's kick off another season.

Welcome back, college football. We missed you.

Florida State vs. Georgia Tech (Over 55.5)

The last time we saw Florida State, well, things were less than optimal.

The Seminoles' unbeaten season came completely undone against Georgia in the Orange Bowl, although things were different then. And it's certainly much different now.

For starters, DJ Uiagalelei is now the team's starting QB. His experience and skill set could be an ideal fit for an offense that is rebooting. Playing against the nation's No. 93-ranked scoring defense from a season ago doesn't hurt this acclimation period, either.

Although the Yellow Jackets enjoyed a rapid improvement on the offensive side of the ball last year, the defense was another story. Heading into this season, Georgia Tech will have to replace enormous pieces of its pass rush. Expecting that to occur this early is asking a lot.

With that acknowledged, Tech should find success on offense. Haynes King creates at quarterback, and he should be able to do that against a defense that is filling plenty of holes.

Playing in Ireland won't slow either team down. Expect a high-scoring, fun football affair to welcome us into the season.

Nevada (+27) vs. SMU

This is a downright bizarre football game. There is no other way to put it.

SMU, as it celebrates its new life in the ACC, will open the season on the road against a team that has struggled mightily of late. It is an unusual matchup and a massive point spread. In fact, it feels a little too massive.

In terms of overall talent, this one isn't all that close. SMU is a superior team, powered by Preston Stone, a very capable QB. The Mustangs will create noise this season in games far bigger than this one.

With that acknowledged, this line feels a little too high. Others clearly feel the same, as it has dipped some.

Nevada won only two games last season. There's no sugarcoating it. In the Wolf Pack's defense, however, the schedule was riddled with difficult games.

New head coach Jeff Choate and offensive coordinator Matt Lubick were excellent hires. This team won't be instantly fixed, and it won't have to be. It just has to stay inside this inflated number at home. (And it will.)

New Mexico (+10.5) vs. Montana State

While it's not the sexiest football game on the docket, this one has plenty of point spread intrigue.

The FCS team, Montana State, is a sizable road favorite. While we've seen FCS teams serve as pesky early opponents against FBS opponents, rarely are those FCS teams expected to win convincingly.

Adding to the intrigue, Bronco Mendenhall, the former head coach at BYU and Virginia, is now at the helm of New Mexico. With 135 wins on his head coaching resume, Mendenhall brings an instant level of respect to a team that won only four games in 2023.

The challenge will come in slowing down Montana State's superb running attack, the key to this team's eight-win season in 2023. The Bobcats are undeniably one of the best FCS programs going right now, and this outcome won't change that.

Although this spread simply feels a tad too aggressive.

In Bronco we trust.

Hawai'i (-38) vs. Delaware State

Just how big of a college football fan are you? Your intentions with this game will ultimately answer that question.

For a moment, forget about wagering on this glorious matchup. Will you stay up and watch?

With a scheduled kickoff of 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday night, Hawai'i will officially start the season in the most degenerate way possible. We are here for it.

After a stretch of challenging football, the Rainbow Warriors closed out the season by winning three of their final four games. Sure, the program will remain a work in progress, but there has been progress under head coach Timmy Chang.

On the other side, Delaware State won a single game last year. It came against Virginia Lynchburg. When the Hornets played Army and Miami (OH), their two toughest opponents of the year, they lost by a combined score of 119-20.

In short, this will be ugly. Really ugly. For the first time in years, Hawai'i can act like a massive favorite out of the gate. It should take full advantage.
