Sean Strickland Teases Dricus Du Plessis Middleweight Title Rematch After UFC 305

Jack Murray

Everybody loves a rematch.

Dricus Du Plessis took the middleweight belt from Sean Strickland in January and successfully defended it against Israel Adesanya on Saturday at UCF 305. Following the successful defense, Strickland made his desire known for a second shot at Du Plessis with a post on X.

UFC president Dana White previously said that the winner of Du Plessis-Adesanya would face Strickland in their next fight. However, it is worth noting that Alex Pereira suggested he will drop back down to Middleweight and could be a contender as well.

A rematch of Strickland-Du Plessis still appears to be the best bet at this point. The UFC 297 clash between Du Plessis and Strickland went the distance and was called for Du Plessis by split decision, and White even acknowledged that he would have picked Strickland as the winner.

Du Plessis has not lost since 2018 and his current win streak is at 10 following the victory at UFC 305. Strickland earned a victory over Paulo Costa at UFC 302 to rebound from the loss at 297.

Du Plessis spoke about the potential rematch with Strickland during his post-fight press conference on Sunday, stating that he knows he can "finish."

"If Strickland is the next fight - the people want to see that fight. It's the fight that people want to see. It's the fight that people think is the next best guy," Du Plessis said. "Going into the Strickland fight, I know now. He can't handle what I have. He can't handle what I have to offer. This time, I can finish him. Yeah, he beat Izzy, but now we have a comparison. That's how you finish someone."

Strickland never was able to successfully defend his middleweight title but earning it back from Du Plessis could be quite the redemption arc for the 33-year-old.
