Flag football is set to be added to the Olympic program for the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles, and while some NFL players have expressed interest in participating, one of USA Flag Football's top players attempted to pump the brakes on that idea on Saturday.

Team USA quarterback Darrell "Housh" Doucette spoke about the notion of NFL players competing in flag football at the Olympics with The Guardian, saying:

"I think it's disrespectful that they just automatically assume that they're able to just join the Olympic team because of the person that they are—they didn't help grow this game to get to the Olympics. Give the guys who helped this game get to where it's at their respect."

Doucette added: "We just don't think they're going to be able to walk on the field and make the Olympic team because of the name, right? They still have to go out there and compete."

He also expressed his believe that USA Flag Football doesn't "need these guys" since they are "already great with who we have."

The International Federation of American Football has held the Flag Football World Championship bi-annually since 2002, and Team USA has largely dominated on the men's side.

The Americans have won four consecutive gold medals in the event and five of the past six, making them the winningest team over Austria, which is second with three gold medals.

While flag football specialists have helped Team USA enjoy tremendous success in the sport, there is little doubt that NFL players competing in the Olympics for the first time would drum up the most interest possible.

Last year, NFL executive Peter O'Reilly told the Associated Press that the league would work with the NFL Players Association to help NFL players compete in the Olympics if they desire to.

Miami Dolphins All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill immediately expressed interest in doing so, and in February, multiple NFL players told ESPN's Stephen Holder they would back Baltimore Ravens quarterback and two-time Super Bowl MVP Lamar Jackson for the Olympic team.

Because the 2028 Summer Olympics will be held entirely in July, any NFL player who wants to participate wouldn't have to miss much training camp, meaning NFL stars playing flag football at the Summer Games is a real possibility despite Doucette's objections.
