Tatjana Smith outdueled American Lilly King to win the women's 100-meter breaststroke on Monday.
Smith won the gold medal with an official time of 1:05.28, while China's Qianting Tang was a surprise silver medalist at 1:05.54. Ireland's Mona McSharry won the bronze (1:05.59), while King shockingly finished in a tie for fourth (1:05.60) with Italy's Benedetta Pilato.
The 27-year-old South African has been one of King's top challengers in the event for two Olympic cycles.
Smith previously won silver in the 100-meter breaststroke at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also won gold in the 200-meter breaststroke.
Smith's win is only the start of her medal contention in Paris. She will try to replicate her 200-meter breaststroke win from Tokyo inside Paris La Defense Arena later this week.
She was the fastest swimmer throughout in the 100-meter breaststroke. She beat out King and Ireland's Mona McSharry for the top time in Sunday's qualifying heats.
