Joel Embiid, Anthony Davis Dealing with Illness; Kerr Confident Stars Play vs. Serbia

Team USA stars Joel Embiid and Anthony Davis have been dealing with illnesses ahead of the Americans' opening game at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.

Head coach Steve Kerr announced Embiid missed Saturday's practice and Davis has missed practice time in recent days due to an illness, but the expectation is both players will be available against Serbia.

"I'm confident we'll have everybody ready tomorrow," Kerr said.

In addition to the illnesses impacting Embiid and Davis, Kevin Durant has been nursing a strained calf since training camp began. He has been practicing since Wednesday and is expected to play Sunday barring any last-minute changes.

"Hopefully (he'll play)," Kerr said of Durant. "He came through the scrimmage two days ago pretty well, and we'll have another practice today and we'll just keep taking it day by day."

If either or both of Davis and Embiid are unable to play, it would significantly change Team USA's rotation. Kerr has used Embiid as the starting center and Davis off the bench in five exhibition games leading up to the Olympics.

If Embiid has to sit out, Davis would presumably move into the starting lineup. Bam Adebayo, who has been the backup four, would play center off the bench.

If both big men had to sit out, Kerr could either put Adebayo in the starting five or play without a traditional center to open the game. The latter option might not be the best strategy since Nikola Jokić is leading the Serbian team.

The Davis-Adebayo pairing off the bench has been a defensive nightmare for opposing teams in the exhibition slate. Davis had six blocks and Adebayo scored 17 points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting in a 105-79 win over Serbia on July 17.

Jokić finished that game with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds, but he shot just 6-of-19 from the field and had the worst plus-minus of any player (minus-27).

Embiid started to find his footing with Team USA at the end of the exhibition slate. He had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists in 22 minutes in a 92-88 win over Germany on Monday.

The United States-Serbia matchup will take place on Sunday at 11:15 a.m. ET.
