Commanders HC: Jayden Daniels Has Been 'Outstanding'; Timeline to Be QB1 Unchanged

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn heaped praise on rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels at training camp Friday but stopped short of naming the No. 2 overall draft pick his starter.

Quinn told reporters that the Commanders are staying true to their original plan for Daniels and the quarterback position, saying: "He's doing outstanding. We're really pleased with where we are, but we're not changing the timelines or the guidelines on how we're gonna approach things."

The Commanders' new head coach said that they "have an effective plan" in place and are "really gonna stay true" to it.

Daniels, 23, was the best player in college football last season, winning the Heisman Trophy after completing 72.2 percent of his passes for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions, and rushing for 1,134 yards and 10 scores at LSU.

While that wasn't quite enough to make him the top quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft ahead of USC's Caleb Williams, who went first overall to the Chicago Bears, Washington was seemingly thrilled to land Daniels at No. 2.

To make room for Daniels, the Commanders traded quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks even though Howell showed quite a bit of potential as the starter last season.

That led many to assume Daniels would be the Day 1 starter, but he still has to contend with veteran Marcus Mariota.

Mariota, who was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft after winning the Heisman at Oregon, has started 74 career NFL games over nine seasons with the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles.

He has primarily been a backup in three of the past four seasons, but the 30-year-old veteran is still solid enough to hold down the fort if need be until Daniels is ready.

However, assuming Daniels has a strong training camp and preseason, it seems likely that the Commanders would favor making him the starter right out of the gates.
