Patriots Rumors: Jabrill Peppers Finalizing 3-Year, $24M Contract Extension

After establishing himself as a valuable starter in the secondary last season, Jabrill Peppers is being rewarded with a new contract from the New England Patriots.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, Peppers is finalizing a three-year, $24 million extension that could be worth up to $30 million.

Peppers had his best season in 2023 with 78 combined tackles, eight pass breakups, two interceptions and one sack. He started 15 games for the first time since 2018.

Per Pro Football Focus metrics, Peppers was the fifth-best safety in the NFL last season with an 87.3 overall grade. He recorded 17 stops in the run game (tied for sixth-most at the position) and allowed just 132 receiving yards on 34 targets in coverage.

A first-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2017, Peppers struggled to live up to that potential early in his career. He was traded to the New York Giants as part of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade in March 2019.

Injuries hampered Peppers' run with the Giants, as he missed 17 games in three seasons. The Patriots signed him to a one-year deal as a free agent in March 2022. He appeared in all 17 games, making five starts, and recorded two tackles for loss.

Peppers' second season in New England's defensive system paid huge dividends. Even though Bill Belichick is no longer head coach, he will get to keep working with Jerod Mayo and new defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington.

The Patriots could have one of the best secondaries in the NFL this season. Peppers, Jonathan Jones, Christian Gonzalez and Kyle Dugger comprise one of the best foursomes in the league when everyone is healthy.

Keeping that unit together for several more years while the Patriots wait for Drake Maye to develop will at least allow the team to remain competitive, even if they aren't quite ready to compete for a playoff spot in 2024.
