MLB Trade Rumors: Latest Buzz on Yandy Díaz, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Tyler Anderson, More

After two notable deals involving contending teams on Thursday, the trade doors are open across Major League Baseball for clubs to upgrade their roster for the home stretch of the regular season.

Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, the defending World Series champion Texas Rangers have played themselves back into position to buy and are keeping an eye on Yandy Díaz of the Tampa Bay Rays.

One potential surprising buyer could be the Pittsburgh Pirates, who Rosenthal notes are "scouting" Miami Marlins outfielders Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Bryan De La Cruz.

The Pirates are also among the potential landing spots for Díaz, according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

The Los Angeles Angels are a team that could be among the most active sellers leading up to the trade deadline. Rosenthal cites pitchers Tyler Anderson, Carlos Estévez, Luis García, infielder Luis Rengifo and outfielder Taylor Ward as potential trade candidates.

Estévez and García both "expected" to be dealt since they are relievers on expiring contracts. Anderson, Rengifo and Ward could remain with the Angels for the remainder of 2024 since they all have multiple years of team control left and might garner more interest in offseason trade talks.

Anderson could be the best starter available. The left-hander owns a 2.91 ERA across 123.2 innings this season. He's under contract through 2025 with a below-market $13 million salary in the final year of his deal.

Díaz's status is complicated because he's been on the restricted list since Saturday after not traveling with the Rays for their series against the New York Yankees coming out of the All-Star break.

Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters prior to the season opener against the Yankees that Díaz was dealing with "a personal matter" and declined to provide additional information.

Díaz has a .726 OPS in 94 games, which is on pace to be his lowest since his first season in the big leagues in 2017 (.679).

The Rangers, who were at one point 10 games back in the AL West, have climbed to within 2.5 games of the first-place Houston Astros. They are still under .500 (51-52) but have won five straight and 13 of 19 games in July.

Pittsburgh has a starting rotation that would cause teams a lot of problems in a playoff series if it were to make the field. Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller and Jared Jones—who is progressing in his recovery from a strained lat—lead a rotation that ranks third in ERA (3.47).

The Pirates need to add more power to their lineup if they want to be a real postseason threat. They rank 23rd in runs scored (422) and tied for 23rd in homers (102).

Chisholm, in particular, would solve some of Pittsburgh's offensive issues. His slash line of .248/.320/.407 isn't stellar, but it makes him look like Aaron Judge compared to the .208/.272/.298 slash line the Pirates are getting from their centerfielders.

Another thing that could make Chisholm attractive to the Pirates is the financial cost. He is only making $2.6 million this season and is under team control through 2026.

Pittsburgh is 26-19 since June 1 and enters Friday just 1.5 games behind the San Diego Padres for the final wild card spot in the NL.

Trade deadline activity really got started on Thursday when Randy Arozarena was dealt by the Rays to the Seattle Mariners and Miami sent reliever A.J. Puk to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Expect to see a lot more moves made by playoff contenders with just four days remaining until the trade deadline on July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
