Kiyan Anthony, son of 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, announced his commitment to Syracuse on Friday in the newest episode of 7PM in Brooklyn.
Anthony is the No. 6 shooting and ranks 32nd overall in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2025 class.
The comparisons to his famous father are inescapable for the New York native, as Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James continues to see while he embarks on his NBA career. Granted, in James' case it doesn't help he's suiting up on the same team as his dad, LeBron James.
Scouting Anthony's game, 247Sports' Eric Bossi saw some familial parallels.
"At 6-foot-4, Anthony is a long and rangy two guard who, no surprise, is wired to score and to do so in bunches," he wrote. "A good, but not overwhelming, athlete, Anthony instead relies on his high level of skill and aggressiveness on the offensive end of the floor. While he can shoot open jumpers, Anthony is actually at his best while shooting contested shots — particularly of the catch and shoot variety — something that he undoubtedly learned from his accomplished father."
Anthony's stock was already on the rise when he and Team Melo traveled to Augusta, South Carolina, for the Nike Peach Jam, and his performance in the event turned some heads.
He dropped 40 points on 15-of-19 shooting, including 5-of-6 as Team Melo cruised to an 81-51 victory over Mac Irvin Fire on July 15. Then came a 26-point and six-assist showing in an 85-68 win over NW Rotary Rebels two days later.
Carmelo helped lift Syracuse to a national title during his only season in college. The expectations on his son won't be anything close to that because Carmelo's freshman year was historic.
Given the way his skills have improved, Kiyan's recruiting ranking could ultimately undersell how good he can be at the next level. He has the potential to be a multifaceted scorer who helps to get his teammates involved.
His arrival will be a big addition to Syracuse's frontcourt.
A lot has changed with the Orange since the 2002-03 season. Legendary head coach Jim Boeheim retired. They left the Big East behind for the ACC. And they're no longer a mainstay in the NCAA tournament. They missed the Big Dance in Boeheim's final two seasons before again failing to qualify under Adrian Autry.
Still, Syracuse is a name a lot of college basketball fans recognize. Autry already secured a commitment from 5-star power forward Sadiq White Jr., who's 27th overall in 247Sports' composite rankings.
For Kiyan, the opportunity to follow in his father's footsteps was too good to pass up.
