Re-Ranking Every NHL Away Jersey After Ducks and Kings Redesigns

Joe Yerdon

A little while back, we got our summertime going by re-ranking the NHL's home jerseys after the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings unveiled their new sweaters for the upcoming season. Many of you wondered when we would be doing the road jerseys.

Today is your lucky day.

We know that the road jerseys aren't necessarily as spicy as the darker home duds, but the road white jerseys provide a necessary change-up in style and look compared to the home and alternate jerseys teams have in their wardrobes.

If there's a universal fact about the white sweaters, it's that it's really hard to do it wrong. The vast majority of them aren't even bad or ugly, but some of them either try too hard to be different or don't try enough, period.

Whether they're throwbacks, faux-backs, wholly original, or derivative we'll call it out and slot them inappropriately (or inappropriately if you disagree).

Not Ranked: Chicago Blackhawks

Ric Tapia/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

We really don't want to repeat ourselves, so we'll link you to when we re-ranked the home jerseys a little while ago. Our opinion holds up just the same.

Chicago's jerseys are iconic, gorgeous and part of a historic hockey legacy and we do love them, but it's been time for a change for a long time. We know a lot of you disagree with how we feel about this. We've read the messages out of the blue on social media to know that some of you feel a lot stronger than others about it.

We get it, we hear you and we thank you for reading, but you're not going to change how we feel about it.

Not Ranked: Utah Hockey Club

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

Just like with their home jerseys, we're not ranking the road jerseys either because what they'll be wearing in 2024-2025 will essentially be placeholders until they settle on a team nickname.

They're going to look generic and they're going to get poked fun at for doing it and they earned that for not being supremely prepared for having an NHL team so quickly. Just know that they've got to hit it not just out of the park, but out of the universe to have something better than the Arizona Coyotes' Kachina jerseys.

Good luck to them when they get to that point. At least the black, blue, and white color scheme makes for a decent start.

30. Washington Capitals

Bill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images

The NHL is moving on to Fanatics making the jerseys for the teams across the league next season, but the Capitals continue to keep the spirit of Reebok alive in their jersey designs, and, friends, it's not very good. At all.

What's weird though is that it works for them in a way that wouldn't for any other team in the league. That said, we've seen enough with Caps throwbacks and alternates to know that not only are there better options out there, but they could be had very easily, too.

Despite hockey jerseys, particularly the road whites, being virtually timeless because of the stripped-down style, the Capitals' road jerseys grow more dated with each passing year. We know they won the Stanley Cup in these jerseys and that means letting them go is almost impossible, but it's time for a freshening up in D.C.

29. Tampa Bay Lightning

Vitor Munhoz/NHLI via Getty Images

We like the Tampa Bay Lightning logo for its simplicity. We even like the jerseys for the same reason. But there's a huge problem with them because of that.

Just like the blue home jerseys, the road white sweaters look exactly like the Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys.

You can mimic a style or use it as a total blueprint for how to put a look together, but when you share the same team colors with a direct division rival, you have to do something to stand up against it.

Then again, the Lightning have beaten the Leafs a bunch in the playoffs and have won the Stanley Cup a few times since Toronto last won one, so...maybe that's enough of a difference in the first place.

28. Carolina Hurricanes

Josh Lavallee/NHLI via Getty Images

We really want to like the Carolina Hurricanes' style more, honestly.

The storm flag stripe around the waist is great as is the secondary logo on the shoulders. The contrast between the red letters with a black outline and the white jersey works well. But the diagonal block lettering of "CANES" on the front with another storm flag nod in the letter "C" makes this whole look a bit too busy.

The Hurricanes dislike their primary logo so much, just dump it already. It doesn't appear anywhere on the road sweater, and it's blacked out on the shoulder of their home jersey. The upside of this jersey, however, is that it made their decision to wear red helmets with it a great call.

27. Columbus Blue Jackets

Zac BonDurant/Getty Images

We feel bad because we're always dogging the Columbus Blue Jackets jerseys. We're not fans of the home blue jersey because it's overwhelmingly navy blue, but the road white jersey is substantially better despite ranking low on this list.

The balance between the white body of the jersey and the blue sleeves on this works great, particularly with the contrast of the crest smack in the middle of it. It's a genuinely good jersey and one they should find ways to wear more often. All of that said, for as strong as the Blue Jackets' logo is, it doesn't lend itself to a lot of creativity to spice the look up even a little bit and that's too bad.

26. Vegas Golden Knights

Cooper Neill/Getty Images

When the Vegas Golden Knights debuted their uniform set upon their inception, the road white jersey always stood out more than the pewter gray home sweater. The white jersey let all of the colors pop and it provided a unique look.

But once they switched to their gold jerseys at home, it was like having an awakening that better things are possible and that looks can, indeed, get a lot cleaner and much more fun. In short, we got spoiled by the glitz and glam of sparkling gold.

Vegas' white sweaters are fine. They work well for them and they're original, but in comparison to what else they have in the closet and to other road jerseys around the league, it falls back to the pack.

25. Florida Panthers

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

The Florida Panthers' current look might not be as warmly recalled as their original leaping panther logo and the jerseys they broke into the NHL with, but they didn't win a Stanley Cup in those jerseys, did they?

While these road jerseys will forever be tied to their Cup-winning legacy, it still doesn't make it a great jersey. The striping is reminiscent of the Montréal Canadiens' home sweater and, frankly, so is the placement of the logo therein. The shoulder patches are fine, we guess, but this look is a winning one for the rest of the time.

It's clean, it stands out, but let us pout a little bit and say that it's just not the same as what they used to have in the 90s that we liked a lot more than this.

24. Minnesota Wild

Christopher Mast/NHLI via Getty Images

The Minnesota Wild's road sweaters always feel like it's missing something. There's a lot of green involved with this look, and that's good. The team is named after nature, so green makes sense.

The break in the green with the red numbers and red stripe around the collar are good but they're overwhelmed by the sea of white and green all over. On the upside, it helps make the Wild logo pop on the front and although the shoulder patches are a little repetitive, they help add some scenery.

Still, a red stripe somewhere on the waist or the sleeves would go a long, long way to making this a supremely good look.

23. Winnipeg Jets

Scott Taetsch/Getty Images

When the Winnipeg Jets debuted their jerseys upon arrival in Manitoba in 2011, as much as the home blues grabbed everyone's eyes, it was the road whites that highlighted what their look would be upon leaving Atlanta.

The Jets adopted all the good colors the Thrashers used and flexed them in the road jerseys. The funky sleeve stripes are unique and using the sky blue with the navy blue makes the whole thing much more appealing.

However, it's still really busy and in a way that doesn't compute. The math must check out in Winnipeg, however, because they've never altered the home or road jerseys and only enhanced their portfolio with an assortment of throwback styles mixed in. All of those looks have helped bury the road whites from our immediate thoughts, but seeing them again makes us appreciate it all the same.

22. Nashville Predators

Derek Cain/Getty Images

Two things can be true for the Nashville Predators jerseys.

Their gold home-and-white road jerseys are supremely good.

They should also find a way to wear the white jerseys as few times as possible.

Nashville adopting bright gold for their home set makes it so you could conceivably use them at home and on the road and never really have a visual conflict. If the NHL would ever be braver and have more color vs. color jersey matchups (like they did in the 2014 Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium between Detroit and Toronto), the Predators would rarely need to bust out the white jerseys.

But they do have to wear them and they're fine...they're just not nearly as enjoyable as the gold ones. And even though they have a very clean look for the road, it's just not overly interesting. At the very least, the guitar pick secondary logo on the shoulder gets highlighted and appreciated the way it ought to.

21. Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim switching up their jersey set was the impetus for us doing our re-rankings and their whole set was a massive upgrade on what they have used the past few seasons. Their new home jerseys embraced the color orange in a way that's almost meant to melt the rods and cones in our eyes. But the road jerseys tone it down since it had to be white.

But fear not, the orange is still there across the shoulders in an 80s/90s kind of style. The revamped original logo crest on the front and the funky new fonts for the letters and numbers help highlight how brand new the entire look is.

The bar for the Ducks to clear compared to the previous jersey was located somewhere five miles underground, but fortunately, they didn't do the least amount of work possible in designing it.

The look is an acquired taste with all of that orange, but it's a good one.

20. Ottawa Senators

Jonathan Kozub/NHLI via Getty Images

Ottawa's throwback-style rebrand in 2021 proved to be a marked improvement over the mishmash of styles they trudged through over the previous 12 to 13 years. Bringing back the original logo from the 90s as well as the jersey design from then got everyone's feelings back in a positive place.

Even though those early-90s Sens teams weren't all that great, once Daniel Alfredsson and Zdeno Chara and Wade Redden and Chris Phillips arrived on the scene, things turned around in a big way and established Ottawa as a perennial contender for years and their white road jerseys go hand-in-hand with those great teams and seasons.

With how tumultuous the past few years have been and the lack of success with the team since 2017, adopting the throwbacks full-time and slightly modernizing them was a great call. It's a clean look and one that makes everyone think about those teams from the past.

19. New York Islanders

Grant Halverson/Getty Images

The Islanders' whole aesthetic is genuinely perfect and since they've made sure to wrap themselves in the original style from the 70s and 80s it's been for the best.

The Isles' efforts to update their look or catch on with fads of the time always fell flat and the fervent fans of Long Island always made sure to let management know about it. It might not always be a great idea to heed what the fans want when it comes to running a team, but in the matters of logos and jerseys, they tend to be right more often than not.

Still, this classic white jersey evokes memories of Mike Bossy, Denis Potvin, Billy Smith and the rest of the Stanley Cup dynasty along with stars after that era like Pat LaFontaine and Steve Thomas.

It's simple, it's still colorful and it's perfect.

18. New Jersey Devils

Andrea Cardin/NHLI via Getty Images

We mentioned during our ranking of home jerseys that the Devils' look is as good as it gets with the logo and the black-and-red color palette. Oddly enough, putting all that on the white background of the road jersey, while still iconic for its history, just doesn't quite hit the same way as the home reds do.

Don't mistake that disappointment for dislike, however. Back before the NHL switched up to having teams wear dark jerseys at home, the Devils' home whites were ferocious and fearsome because of Scott Stevens and Martin Brodeur. Seeing that logo on a white background in a raucous Meadowlands Arena was enough to cause nightmares.

That kind of history attached to a look so clean still makes it a fantastic jersey.

17. St. Louis Blues

Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images

We admitted we weren't huge fans of St. Louis' home jerseys, but their road whites help tie it all together.

The grand Blues logo front and center with the colorful shoulder array with blue and gold intermixed make this look a truly classic style. It hasn't changed drastically over the years and while that was a knock against the home sweaters, it's a compliment for the road jersey.

Even though the Blues could stand to have a slightly fresher look, tinkering too much with the road jersey would be a tough decision. It's an iconic look for a franchise that doesn't always get a lot of respect despite their history in the league. The white road jersey really hammers that all home in the best way.

16. Dallas Stars

Curtis Comeau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

One of the coolest things about the Dallas Stars rebrand in 2013 was how it helped bring them into the modern era with a new logo and a brighter shade of green. Even though they're eager to tell you it's called "victory green," we just understand it to be a more fun shade to look at than the dark green they'd been using for years before that.

Darker colors always mute and dull everything else around them and in the case of the Stars' road white jersey, taking that brighter green and laying it on the white body of the jersey with black stripes and the massive logo on the front makes for a snazzy jersey.

The circular old-fashioned style logo on the shoulders helps add a little bit of flair, but it's unnecessary for what the entire look brings to the table. It's a supremely clean look for a road jersey and creates a nice change-up compared to the home set.

15. Seattle Kraken

Keith Gillett/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

We're big fans of the Seattle Kraken's set of jerseys, but it's the road whites that grab your attention and make you want to drop hundreds of dollars to get one of your own.

With the white jersey base and the Kraken's color set of deep, dark navy blue, baby blue and sea foam green along with that little bit of salmon is a treat for the eyes. Mix in the fantastic secondary anchor logo on the shoulders and it's everything you could want out of a jersey for a brand-new team. We only hope the folks in Salt Lake City are taking notes.

Whether you prefer their dark blue home jersey, or the road white is a matter of taste, but for us, it's the road jersey that wins the day for the way the whole thing came together and makes them one of the most distinctively designed teams in the league.

14. San Jose Sharks

Melissa Tamez/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The San Jose Sharks throwing it back to the 90s with their new look they debuted in 2022 was one of the smartest ideas they've made in years. That and finally deciding to go full steam ahead on a rebuild and then landing Macklin Celebrini in the process at least.

But seriously folks, leaning hard into teal and black and snazzing up the classic Sharks logos to make them reminiscent of their expansion look but not the same is awesome. Their road white jersey gets us thinking about that miracle team in 1994 but not getting lost in the memories of Doug Wilson and Johan Garpenlov and Kelly Kisio and Arturs Irbe and... wait, where were we?

The white jerseys combined with the teal helmets just work, even though it drives some fans a little batty. But adding just that little bit more color to the look works and helps drive home the point of how cool the jerseys are.

13. Boston Bruins

Rich Graessle/NHLI via Getty Images

Even though we're sad the Boston Bruins are shelving their 100th Anniversary style jerseys after one season, it meant they were bringing back the look they'd been rocking before that which was already pretty great.

It's hard to make a Bruins jersey look bad, what with the iconic spoked-B logo and the black and gold color scheme. Sure, they've tried to mess it up in the past with the "Pooh Bear" but even that one is still fun, if not totally out of left field.

The Bruins road jersey is just a great look all-around and with their very old logo from the early days of the franchise on the shoulder, the entire jersey is a modern look that pays respect to a wide swath of the team's history and that's the kind of thing we enjoy. We also like it a lot more when it looks as nice as it does in general.

12. Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings' throwback rebrand which brings forth a modernized version of their silver-and-black logo from their Wayne Gretzky era in the 90s meant they were automatically going to have a better look than what they've been doing for the past 25-plus years, particularly the past 13.

While the home jersey of this new-old look is the more iconic look, the road white jersey was about as good as it got back in the day and should again now. Gretzky, Rob Blake and Jari Kurri made that style so popular in bringing the Kings into the limelight to compete with Magic Johnson and the Lakers then that having Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty and Adrian Kempe doing it now while LeBron James and Anthony Davis hold it down just helps highlight that time is a flat circle.

Nostalgia is a heck of a thing and it's not always the best thing in a lot of cases. But for the Kings to upgrade on what they've had for over a decade with this particular style, it's fantastic. We're just sad they didn't dial it all the way back to the Forum Blue and gold crowns.

11. Toronto Maple Leafs

China Wong/NHLI via Getty Images

When a jersey serves as the direct inspiration for another team in the league, you've nailed it. The Toronto Maple Leafs have got it spot on with their jerseys, particularly the road whites.

The Leafs logo does all the heavy lifting for their jerseys which makes it easier for the design to be there and work. A few blue stripes on the white outlay of the sweater with the massive Leafs crest on the front and it's perfect.

We razzed the Lightning earlier in this ranking for basically using the same style, but when it looks as good as this, why wouldn't they want to copy the Leafs' homework? The only time the Leafs have had jerseys that were at all questionable came during the Reverse Retro program and, fortunately for them, it was a short-lived effort.

You don't mess with an iconic look.

10. Detroit Red Wings

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

Speaking of perfect, iconic looks...the Detroit Red Wings white road jersey is the virtual blueprint for so many teams throughout the hockey world.

It's a simple formula with red and white and having the perfect Red Wings logo on the front ties it all together in legendary fashion.

What's even more impressive about the Red Wings' jersey is you can trace it all through their history and guys from Ted Lindsay and Gordie Howe to Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov to Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidström to Dylan Larkin and Moritz Seider...they've all worn essentially the same style jersey. Yes, they added names to the back eventually, but it's all the same layout and look.

That kind of history is the sort of thing you can't buy, and it helps build the mystique for an Original Six franchise that probably didn't need more of it anyway.

9. Vancouver Canucks

Andy Devlin/NHLI via Getty Images

We know that a lot of fans want to see the Vancouver Canucks bring back the "Flying Skate" logo and jersey from the 90s full-time, but it's really hard to do that when after years of constant tinkering and changing looks they finally landed on something that looks timeless.

The Canucks logo has remained steady since 1997 and when they took "Vancouver" off the jerseys above the logo in 2019, they landed on a look that is as good as it gets around the league.

The blue and green color scheme on the white jersey is beautiful and when you add in the "stick in rink" logo on the shoulders that pays homage to the team's first years in the NHL, it's a beautiful jersey that's modern and has enough historic touches to it to make it unassailable. It may be a bit underappreciated in fan circles, but fortunately for us, we could put our East Coast bias aside and recognize beauty in its own right.

8. Colorado Avalanche

Jonathan Kozub/NHLI via Getty Images

For as cool as we were on the Colorado Avalanche home jerseys, we're equally on fire for the road sweaters.

There's something to be said about giving certain logos and colors a clean canvas on which to put on a show and the Avalanche's road jersey is the perfect example. The burgundy that darkens the sleeves, the brilliant logo front and center along with the lighter blue and silver highlights throughout it, it's a reminder of the team's history but also very much representative of who they are now.

Fans in Denver will forever have a place in their hearts for Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy, but with Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar and Devon Toews, the current great iteration of the team is also worthy of its ties to the past. This look helps bridge that gap of time but gives enough space for each era to have its own flavor.

7. Montréal Canadiens

Chris Tanouye/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images

The biggest knock on the Montréal Canadiens' road sweater is that it can't hold a candle to the home sweater despite the fact it's virtually just as iconic.

After all, when a historic team like the Habs has a set of jerseys they haven't changed at all since just after the end of World War II (apart from the NHL mandating last names on jerseys in 1977), you know they've got their image down perfectly.

You could argue the Canadiens have the most iconic uniform in all of sports, home and road. Sure, you'd get a lot of arguments from fans of the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Lakers, but the mystique and history that envelops the Canadiens is truly remarkable.

The fact that the road white sweater is synonymous with winning Stanley Cups the same as the home reds helps seal the deal for how great it is. But, for as great as it is, it's eclipsed massively by its counterpart and for as much as we laud this road sweater, there are a few others we enjoy a little bit more.

6. New York Rangers

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

We know the New York Rangers are also known as "The Blueshirts" but we're here to argue that their road white jerseys are their actual best jersey.

The white jersey has all the same font and lettering accouterments as the home blues with the drop shadow to make it stand out more and the red, white and blue color scheme. But the white jersey also has the blue, white and red shoulder pattern that makes this jersey special.

The striping is great, seeing "Rangers" spelled out diagonally in the same font as the lettering for the names on the back is as good as it gets, but it's the shoulders that get us to fawn over this sweater.

It's a truly iconic look and the image that's forever seared into our memory is that of an exuberant Mark Messier being handed the Stanley Cup by Gary Bettman on the ice at Madison Square Garden in 1994 while in this jersey. Yeah, it was pretty great when the home teams wore white back then. But now that they get to take this look on the road with them everywhere, it's like having a taste of "Mystery, Alaska" in every NHL city.

5. Philadelphia Flyers

Jason Mowry/Getty Images

Using a style that mimics some of the past jerseys in Philadelphia Flyers history and bringing back burnt orange as the main color helped them remind all of us just what it was like to see the Flyers roll into town again.

Even though the Flyers are more well known for their home orange and black set, the new-old style of the road jerseys are just historic-ish enough to bring back memories of their great teams from the 70s and 80s and with John Tortorella coaching the current team, it's like getting a taste of those days, too.

The Flyers have a forever iconic logo and building the look of the jersey evokes feelings of seeing those past teams knowing about them or even having seen video of them through history, it stokes the flames of rivalries past.

When you see that team with that logo in that style of jersey, you're expecting the game to be exciting in one way or another. When just the uniforms can get rival fans worked up and ready to scream, that tells you everything you need to know about how good it is.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

The best thing the Pittsburgh Penguins did, style-wise, was bringing back the late-80s/early-90s skating penguin logo and the uniforms to match. The Pens did that full-time in 2016 and immediately won a Stanley Cup wearing them. It was meant to be, but also this is the way the Penguins were always meant to look.

Connecting the current great Penguins Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang to the 90s icons of Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Kevin Stevens (and so many others) wasn't something they needed to do, but we're glad they did.

The Penguins' road white sweater is as good as it gets and is perfectly equal to the home black one as well. They've won multiple Cups in that jersey in two different eras and have a laundry list of Hall of Famers who got to wear it as well. Beauty and history go a long way with us, and this Penguins sweater has both in spades.

3. Buffalo Sabres

Dave Reginek/NHLI via Getty Images

Even though the Buffalo Sabres are still working on that whole "getting back to the playoffs and winning more games" thing, what they've got nailed is how they look. Their royal blue home jersey is great, but it plays second banana to their road white set.

It's another case where a team brought back an old favorite, but in this case, it was more of a return to the original colors. For years they had a similar style jersey but with navy blue and darker gold and more silver/gray involved. But in 2021, they went back to royal blue and gold full-time and made the jerseys more like the ones they wore from the team's inception in 1970 through 1996.

The current ones have slight differences with the stripes, but the look so strongly resembles what the franchise used to wear that you can't help but think of the French Connection, Alexander Mogilny, Pat LaFontaine and Dominik Hasek.

It's a look that last more than a quarter century the first time around and after trying out a few other things, they came back to their senses with these classic beauties. At least they've got that going for them, which is nice.

2. Calgary Flames

Steven Ryan/NHLI via Getty Images

No, we're not Calgary Flames fans here, but we are fans of Calgary Flames jerseys. We adore the bright red home jerseys that were throwbacks born again into the modern era, and the road white sweaters are just as great, if not even better.

As much as the road reds stand out against any jersey in the league, there's something to be said for the road whites for how it allows the perfect Flames logo to explode into your senses at first sight. The red and yellow stripes and the red shoulder yoke from the 80s coming back into the current day is a perfect hockey look and when it comes in the colors and logo of the Flames, it's just about total perfection.

You can watch any Flames game, home or road, and be treated to an aesthetically pleasing game on your television. Very few looks scream, "HOCKEY!" the way Calgary's do, and their road jersey can be muted just enough to not just highlight how good they look but make whatever their opponent is wearing look great just by being in the same place.

1. Edmonton Oilers

Peter Joneleit/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Maybe we're influenced by seeing the Edmonton Oilers throughout the playoffs and into the Stanley Cup Final. Maybe we're naturally inclined to like older-style jerseys (note: we are), but seeing Connor McDavid pile up points throughout the playoffs and rightfully invoking Wayne Gretzky's accomplishments with Edmonton in the 80s in these very same jerseys got us all in our feelings.

Watching those Oilers teams fly up and down the ice in the 80s and winning Stanley Cups while scoring goals by the truckload was the sort of thing that could make anyone a fan of the sport. It's a lot like how watching McDavid blaze his way all over the ice and do things we haven't seen players do since that era (or maybe never before in some cases) did for a lot of fans this summer.

But it's the jersey that was the same and the Oilers logo on the white jersey with the blue and orange stripes along with the blue and orange shoulder yoke, the exact same style Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey and everyone else from that dynasty wore that helped us put this jersey at the top of the list.

Recency bias? Maybe, but doubting the greatness of this sweater would be a mistake nonetheless.
