Tiger Woods Says It Was 'Very Difficult' to Pass on USA Captaincy for 2025 Ryder Cup

Adam Wells

Tiger Woods has opened up about his decision not to accept a captain spot on the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Woods called it a "very difficult" decision but his schedule wouldn't allow him the time needed to do the job:

"I just didn't feel like I could do the job properly. I couldn't devote the time. I barely had enough time to do what I'm doing right now, and add in the TGL starts next year, as well as the Ryder Cup. You add all that together and then with our negotiations with the PIF, all that concurrently going on at exactly the same time, there's only so many hours in the day. I just didn't feel like I would be doing the captaincy or the players in Team USA justice if I was the captain with everything that I have to do."

Woods' comments echo what he said in a statement last week when it announced that Keegan Bradley would serve as captain for the American team:

"With my new responsibilities to the TOUR and time commitments involved, I felt like I would not be able to commit the time to Team USA and the players required as a captain. That does not mean I wouldn't want to captain a team in the future. If and when I feel it is the right time, I will put my hat in the ring for this committee to decide."

Woods is one of 13 people on the PGA Tour Enterprises board of directors that was established in March. The group was organized with a focus on "driving fan engagement and growth, as well as developing new media, sponsorship and commercial opportunities."

The 48-year-old on the PGA Tour Enterprises transaction subcommittee that remains in negotiations with the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund to finalize the PIF's partnership deal with the PGA Tour that was originally announced in June 2023.

Given the uncertainty around talks with the Public Investment Fund, the PGA Tour secured a $3 billion investment from a consortium of American sports team owners called Strategic Sports Group.

Woods and Rory McIlroy are launching the TGL simulator golf league in January 2025. GolfDigest's Stephen Hennessey reported in April that Woods was in position to be the U.S. Ryder Cup captain if he wanted it.

The last time Woods participated in the Ryder Cup was in 2018. He was added to the team as a captain's pick by Jim Furyk.

Woods spoke to the media on Tuesday ahead of the Open Championship this weekend. He is participating in the tournament from Royal Troon Golf Club for the first time since 2022.
