Monte Kiffin Dies at 84; Father of Ole Miss HC Lane Won Super Bowl 37 as Bucs DC

Longtime NFL and college coach Monte Kiffin, the father of Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin, died on Thursday. He was 84.

Kiffin most famously served as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers between the 1996 and 2008 seasons, helping lead the team to a Super Bowl title in the 2002 campaign.

He most recently was a defensive analyst at Ole Miss between the 2020 and 2023 seasons under his son.

Other stints in the college game included being a graduate assistant (1966-72) and defensive coordinator (1973-76) at Nebraska; the defensive coordinator (1977-79) and assistant head coach (1979) at Arkansas; the head coach at NC State (1980-82); the defensive coordinator at Tennessee (2009); the assistant head coach at USC (2010-12); and a defensive assistant at Florida Atlantic (2017-19).

His résumé at the NFL level was just as long.

Alongside his long tenure with the Bucs, he was the defensive coordinator (1991) and linebackers coach (1992-94) for the Minnesota Vikings; the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (1995); the defensive coordinator (2013) and assistant head coach (2014) for the Dallas Cowboys and a defensive assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2016).

His excellent defenses with the Buccaneers ultimately produced four NFL Hall of Famers: linebacker Derrick Brooks, defensive tackle Warren Sapp, safety John Lynch and cornerback Ronde Barber. In March, it was announced Kiffin would join them in the Hall as a recipient of the Award of Excellence.

He also had an eye for identifying coaching talent. Among his defensive staffers in Tampa Bay were Rod Marinelli, Lovie Smith, Herm Edwards, Mike Tomlin, Raheem Morris and Gus Bradley, all who eventually became NFL head coaches.

It was no surprise, then, that he was ultimately named to the Buccaneers' Ring of Honor.

"I love that man and am so indebted to him," Lynch, now the general manager for the San Francisco 49ers, told Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. "Monte had a unique enthusiasm for life, football and family. He also had a passion for coaching—and helping people like myself become the best version of themselves. He was a great listener—he listened to his players. He knew I played best when I got involved in the game early so he tried to blitz me in every first series of a game."

As defensive minds go, there weren't many more impactful to the modern game than Kiffin.
