NBA Summer League 2024: Hot Takes on Bronny, Filipowski, Pippen More from Wednesday

Joseph Zucker

The NBA Summer League hasn't yet kicked into full gear, but basketball fans had a relatively full slate Wednesday night with four games spread across the schedule.

The California Classic and Salt Lake City Summer Leagues both drew to a close as everyone in the league will soon shift their focus to Las Vegas. Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the action.

Bronny James Still a Work in Progress

Bronny James delivered a multifaceted performance in his 29 minutes on the floor in the Los Angeles Lakers' 80-76 loss to the Miami Heat. He shot 1-of-3 from the floor for three points, though he added five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

The 6'2" guard also got a taste of what it'll be like to defend in the NBA.

That highlight will obscure James' larger contributions on that end of the floor, though. Showing out on defense only goes so far in terms of mapping out his potential given the level of competition, but the instincts he possesses are clear to see.

James wasn't the Lakers rookie that had most people talking, though.

Dalton Knecht Makes Most of Green Light on Offense

Dalton Knecht poured in a team-high 20 points and narrowly missed out on a double-double by hauling in nine boards. He also had one assist, which came on a feed to James in the first quarter.

Knecht took 18 shots, eight of which came from deep. That's the kind of self-confidence he'll need in order to make an impression on a team that includes LeBron James and Anthony Davis. They'll be expecting Knecht to fire away when they put the ball in his hands.

The 2024 SEC Player of the Year looked like a steal when he fell to L.A. with the 17th pick. Nothing from Wednesday night would refute that idea.

Keyonte George Steals Spotlight from Jazz Rookies

The Summer League is often a great showcase for second-year players because they have an experience edge on many of the opponents they're matched up against. Keyonte George's showing in the Utah Jazz's 93-85 win over the Philadelphia 76ers was a prime example of that.

George dropped 31 points in 31 minutes, and he put the finishing touch on the victory with this thunderous alley-oop.

After struggling a bit as a rookie, the 6'4" guard might be turning a corner in Year 2.

Utah's three draft picks, by contrast, weren't up to his level. Cody Williams and Kyle Filipowski combined to shoot 1-of-14 and had two points apiece. Isaiah Collier was more efficient, with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, but committed six fouls in just 19:36.

Of the three, Filipowski's Summer League has been the most concerning so far.

The former Duke star might be spending a lot of his time with the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA G League as a rookie.

Scotty Pippen Jr. Builds on Summer League Opener

For the second time this week, Scotty Pippen Jr. was a standout performer in a losing effort for the Memphis Grizzlies.

Pippen finished with 17 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals as Memphis fell 80-77 to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Granted, his box score looks much better if you ignore his shooting line (6-of-19 overall and 1-of-8 on threes).

Pippen was found money for the Grizzlies last year as he averaged 12.9 points and 4.7 assists in his 21 appearances. With the benefit of a full offseason with the franchise, he's poised to emerge as a solid role player in the backcourt behind Ja Morant.
