Wimbledon 2024 Results: Instant Reactions to Wednesday's Winners and Losers

Nicholas Nathanson

For the fifth straight year, the Wimbledon men's semifinal will be without an American.

On Wednesday, Lorenzo Musetti defeated Taylor Fritz in five sets to reach his maiden Grand Slam semifinal.

The No. 25 seed, who is 12-2 on the grass-court surface this year, will next face the most difficult challenge in all of tennis: a match on Centre Court against Novak Djokovic.

The 24-time champion reached his sixth straight Wimbledon semifinal early Wednesday after his opponent, Alex De Minaur, withdrew.

In the women's draw, Elena Rybakina defeated Elina Sviotlina in straight sets.

The fourth seed will face Barbora Krejcikova, who stunned Jelena Ostapenko, reaching the Wimbledon semifinals for the first time in her career.

Both semifinalists have dropped just one set this entire tournament, though Rybakina will enter as the overwhelming favorite.

Lorenzo Musetti Reaches First Grand Slam Semifinal, Faces Tough Task Ahead

An Italian has made the Wimbledon semifinal, but it's neither Jannik Sinner nor former finalist Matteo Berrettini.

Instead, it's Lorenzo Musetti who has made it to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

On Wednesday, the Italian, who has had limited success at Wimbledon in the past, stunned Taylor Fritz in five sets to improve his grass-court record to 12-2 in 2024.

Musetti will have the daunting task of facing Novak Djokovic, who has lost just once at Wimbledon in the last five years and is attempting to tie Roger Federer's record with eight Wimbledon titles.

Musetti faces as much of a mental battle (1–5 in official matches) as he does a physical one, and it will take a remarkable, perhaps herculean, effort to defeat the Serbian.

Elena Rybakina Surges to Semifinals, Now Clear Favorite to Win Wimbledon

Elena Rybakina absolutely dominated Elina Svitolina, winning 22 of 26 points behind her first serve to reach the Wimbledon semifinals for the second time in her career.

The fourth seed has remained consistent throughout, dropping just one set along the way.

Rybakina will face Barbora Krejcikova in the semifinals, an opponent she has never defeated in her career (0-2).

Furthermore, Krejcikova is coming off an impressive win against No. 13 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who had not dropped a set before the quarterfinal.

Like Rybakina, Krejcikova has also flourished at Wimbledon, dropping one set.

Despite Rybakina's struggles in the head-to-head, the Kazakh is brimming with confidence and will enter as the clear favorite.
