Re-Ranking Every NHL Home Jersey After Ducks and Kings Redesigns

Joe Yerdon

One of the fun things about summertime for the NHL is that it allows us to revisit some of our favorite lists and rankings and sometimes teams around the league give us the chance to do it in a way that makes it fresh.

Thanks to the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and Utah Hockey Club, we've got a few new jerseys to gawk at and give our thumbs up or down.

The Kings and Ducks have changed up their home and road uniforms for the upcoming season and with the Arizona Coyotes transformed into the Utah Hockey Club, they've got their own jerseys until they get that whole nickname thing figured out.

We'll rank the home jerseys of every team in the NHL and see if the Kings, Ducks and Utah rose, fell, or stayed neutral compared to what they had before.

You'll love and hate us, but you'll respect us for putting in the work on this while there's no hockey to keep us busy.

Not Ranked: Utah Hockey Club

Utah owner Ryan Smith and 2024 first-round pick Tij Iginla Jeff Vinnick/NHLI via Getty Images

It wouldn't be fair of us to hand out a ranking to a team that doesn't have an actual name yet apart from its location.

Utah Hockey Club needs jerseys to wear for its first season in Salt Lake and without being called the Mammoth, Yeti, Blizzard, Venom, or Outlaws, they're going with the generic video game create-a-team setup and so are their jerseys.

We love the color scheme with black, white and light blue and hope that it stays. We're hoping any logo will incorporate the shape of the state of Utah in it and what they ultimately wear on the ice should have that somewhere on the shoulders.

What you saw their draftees wearing in Las Vegas were still placeholders, albeit ones that will be close to the look of what they'll wear on the ice this season.

We'll be able to give Utah a proper place in the rankings when it's got a nickname and logo to work with as well as an actual jersey design. For now, it'll sit rank-free awaiting future judgment.

Not Ranked: Chicago Blackhawks

Michael Reaves/Getty Images

We're sure Chicago fans are going to be annoyed at us again for not ranking their team, but our position on the jersey hasn't changed since the last time we ranked everyone's home jerseys.

Chicago's jerseys are gorgeous, iconic and a product of a previous era from which it's time to move on.

The days of using Native American imagery should have been over a long time ago. We understand everyone loves to hang onto something they've loved all their lives, and the organization has done its part to give back to those groups and communities and that's commendable.

But it's time to find something different.

30. Columbus Blue Jackets

Ben Jackson/NHLI via Getty Images

The Blue Jackets' logo is really good, and the red, white and blue color scheme is beyond apt for a team whose nickname comes from representing the Union Army during the Civil War.

But there's got to be a way to make these jerseys pop more, right?

The piping/striping down the sleeves is a leftover from the Reebok days and now we're two manufacturers past that with Fanatics taking over for Adidas.

Columbus' jerseys are begging for a refresh at some point, which should come a lot sooner than later.

29. Washington Capitals

Scott Taetsch/Getty Images

You have to give the Washington Capitals a bit of respect for sticking with the Reebok refresh from 2007 and refusing to make any huge changes with it because they've been really good the entire time they've had this look.

On the other hand, anytime they've worn their 1980s throwbacks or even the Reverse Retro jerseys they had, it made an immediate impact on how much cooler they looked on the ice.

The Capitals have two excellent logos with the modernized original script logo and the "Weagle" on the shoulders. With the team celebrating its 50th anniversary this season, you have to believe we'll see some throwback fun during the year, which would be very good.

Know what else would be fun? A redesign of Washington's home and away uniforms.

28. St. Louis Blues

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images

The St. Louis Blues are another team with an iconic logo and a look that's gotten a bit stale.

This particular home jersey is one they've had since 2014 and while it's pretty good and there's nothing wrong with it at all, the 2017 Winter Classic jerseys with the lighter shade of blue that they've used as an alternate since 2018 are infinitely better looking.

Rick Ulreich/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

Those Winter Classic jerseys were a throwback to the Blues' early days in the late-1960s and sometimes the old designs nailed it right off the hop. In this case, the darker blue on the shoulders with the not-as-dark blue main jersey doesn't grab your eyes right away. Which is unfortunate because the logo is so good.

Finding a way to do a modernized version of the 1960s throwback for the home jersey would crush it.

27. Tampa Bay Lightning

Mark LoMoglio/NHLI via Getty Images

The Tampa Bay Lightning jerseys are fine.

They're not remarkable, they don't have anything to be upset with design-wise, they're clean as anything and the logo crest is huge and bold. The secondary shoulder logos are even pretty good.

If the Lightning were a team that had been around since the 1930s and kept this look going in some way since then, it would be lauded and appreciated. It might even be revered for consistency. But it hasn't been and when they made this switch in 2011, it was a vast upgrade on what they had going on before in the Reebok era.

Despite being a classic look, it always feels like a newer team like the Lightning should have more going on with their jerseys.

The third jersey they debuted in February was a great step toward doing something like that. If those ideas can be applied to their home and road sets, they might have something.

Mark LoMoglio/NHLI via Getty Images

26. Florida Panthers

Dave Sandford/NHLI via Getty Images

It was awesome to see the Florida Panthers win their first Stanley Cup in June and winning a title is the easiest way to ensure a team keeps its jerseys for years to come.

After all, what's got better vibes than the look you raised the Cup over your head in?

Alas, this means the Panthers jersey set isn't going anywhere. We're big fans of the classic leaping panther logo and the jerseys it adorned in the past.

The shield with the stoic panther head on it is fine, and the boldness of the red jersey is very good. But it just feels like they could be doing so much more with it.

One of the hardest things about the Reverse Retro program going bye-bye is that we'll never have truly great concepts like the Panthers had in their RR 2.0 look with the baby-blue jersey and the secondary logo from the 1990s as the crest.

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images

Sigh. True beauty is fleeting.

25. Carolina Hurricanes

Josh Lavallee/NHLI via Getty Images

The Hurricanes switched to their black jerseys as their full-time home set in 2022, and while black and red never go wrong as a combination, it's kind of odd that their main logo isn't front and center.

Mind you, we really like the hurricane flags on a hockey stick secondary logo. It's a perfect fit for the team. But seeing how this used to be their alternate jersey, it makes sense that the primary logo was relegated to the right shoulder and blacked out to match the theme of the jersey itself.

What we're saying here is we miss the red jersey and would love to see it back in a way that works again. Their original jerseys from the late-1990s were very different at the time but wound up being very good.

That said, with so many teams embracing red at home, it's understandable why Carolina wanted to switch it up a bit.

Doesn't mean we have to like it, though.

24. Winnipeg Jets

Jonathan Kozub/NHLI via Getty Images

Although we have the Jets ranked a bit further down in the list, don't be mistaken here: We do like their home jerseys.

That said, the critical error they've made over the years is bringing back various looks that hearken back to the days of the WHA Jets and the old logo they rocked before they relocated to Arizona.

Those jerseys, every iteration of them, were vastly superior to what the current version of the Jets wear now.

The current logo is good and deeply Canadian to ensure everyone there can forget about that franchise's roots in Atlanta. However, if the Coyotes' history and records go unclaimed thanks to Alex Meruelo deciding he no longer wants to bring a hockey team back to Phoenix...well, you see what I'm getting at here.

If the Jets manage to acquire the Coyotes/Jets 1.0 records, they should ditch this look as soon as possible and bring back the 1990s Winnipeg Jets jerseys post-haste.

23. Ottawa Senators

Chris Tanouye/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images

When the Ottawa Senators brought back their original 1990s-style jerseys, it was a marked upgrade on what they had been working with previously.

It's a clean all-black look that still manages to grab your eyes. It also helps that whenever you see it up close it means Brady Tkachuk is mixing it up in a scrum or scoring a goal.

It's a strong look that, while a little bland, is great but doesn't quite have the "oomph" needed to push it past some of the other teams on our list. And that's OK because a lot of those teams have set a high bar to surpass.

What would be interesting to see is how it would look with a patch of white on the sleeves between the two red lines, just like they added in 1995 when they spruced up their look.

Hey, maybe that would help spring the Senators into the playoffs and beyond, as it coincidentally did back then.

22. Colorado Avalanche

Michael Martin/NHLI via Getty Images

We criticized teams like Columbus and Washington for having old-style Reebok piping on their jerseys, and we're not exactly going to crush the Colorado Avalanche for the same because that style is a throwback for them.

The entire look of their home jersey isn't a 100 percent replication of what they wore in the 1990s, the coloring is different more than anything, but there's something about the way it comes together that just feels a little bit off. Maybe it's the gray?

Whatever it is, it's just that slight bit off to make it not quite as fun as their Joe Sakic-era style jerseys were.

Mind you, the look is still very good. The lighter shade of blue is great and the Avs logo being gigantic on the front is how it ought to be. But it just feels off in a way that's difficult to find the words for, which is rather embarrassing considering we're the ones coming up with the words.

Let's just move along, shall we?

21. Minnesota Wild

Bruce Kluckhohn/NHLI via Getty Images

After all the buzz that went around about a false report of the Minnesota Wild swapping their current green, red and cream scheme for the classic Minnesota North Stars green and gold color setup, we're here to boldly proclaim that their current palette is very good and so are their home jerseys.

Don't get us wrong, we adore the North Stars/Wild mashup that came forth in the Reverse Retro program, which the team held onto as an alternate jersey. But there's something to be said for carving your own identity, and in Minnesota where hockey is life and the North Stars leaving for Dallas hurt a lot of fans (and still does), the Wild have been doing their thing for nearly 25 years. Ironically, that's nearly as long as the North Stars called Bloomington, Minnesota home.

The Wild home set is simple, but good. Even though their logo gets poked fun at online, it's a strong and unique logo. It's just not as good as the iconic North Stars logo, something that goes for just about every logo ever created, mind you.

20. Vegas Golden Knights

David Becker/NHLI via Getty Images

The middle part of our rankings can get jumbly and is prone to our whims of how we feel on a given day. With a couple of the Golden Knights' division rivals getting new looks, they're getting a boost and that means some teams get moved out of the way and Vegas is one of them.

We're big fans of the Golden Knights going full glitz and glam with gold for the home jersey. When they made the switch from their pewter gray and black jersey to gold to wear at home full-time in 2022, it was such a slam-dunk decision.

While the gray was more emblematic of what knights in the round would wear, the knights in Vegas are golden and should be adorned as such.

Having gold sparkly jerseys at home on The Strip in Las Vegas just makes too much sense and is perfect for them. There are minor quibbles with the design of the jersey itself, but rest assured, these are very good.

19. Nashville Predators

John Russell/NHLI via Getty Images

The Nashville Predators' all-gold look at home is so good it hurts your eyes if you look for long enough. This is a compliment and not snark.

The Preds going full-blown gold at home was the bold move that a lot of other teams need to take note of when it comes to how they dress in their own rink. Heck, there's a team that made sure to copy their notes that are coming up later in this ranking.

Simply put, the Predators' home set is great because of how bluntly gold it is, and gold in a different way than Vegas shows off. Nashville isn't as glitzy as Las Vegas, but it'll still knock you silly with how busy of a place it is, especially at night.

Playing against the Predators when they're all decked out like this is more like standing on the stage at Ryman Auditorium with the spotlight right in your eyes. Only in this case, it's Roman Josi and Juuse Saros getting in your way with the massive Predators logo on the front snarling at you.

18. Seattle Kraken

Christopher Mast/NHLI via Getty Images

The ingenuity of the Seattle Kraken logo is only outdone by the color scheme of their home jersey. the various shades of blue and blue green make you think of the sea while the bright salmon red stripe and eye of the Kraken in the logo grab your attention away from it.

It might feel a bit subdued because of its simplicity in design, but it's because of it that makes it work so well. Add in the anchor logo in the design of the Space Needle on the shoulders, and you've got a great jersey.

Even though we were all hoping for some kind of stripe-filled nod to the Seattle Metropolitans of the 1910s in some way, their Winter Classic jersey scratched that itch for us and made us appreciate their home jerseys a little more for not going overboard with the lighter colors and sea green.

17. Los Angeles Kings

Kings 2024 first-round pick Liam Greentree Candice Ward/Getty Images

When we last did our jersey rankings, the Los Angeles Kings were dead-last.

Their previous iteration had grown tired, and the weaknesses in the design and the logo had worn us all out. It was borderline criminal for the Kings with all their history of gorgeous jerseys to look so dull.

Fortunately, they were listening to all of us begging for a change and decided to throw it back to the 1990s in their own way. They modernized the silver and black logo and brought back a design nearly exactly as they had back then.

The new jerseys are different from the old ones because the new ones will have the sleeve numbers above the silver-white-silver stripe as opposed to the band of white on the 1990s jerseys. Older folks will need to adjust to that, but that's the way their previous jerseys did the numbering, so there's at least one holdover in design.

All of that nitpicking aside, the jersey looks great, and the silver stripes are glittery in design. That's Hollywood, baby, and that's the way we like it.

16. Vancouver Canucks

Jeff Vinnick/NHLI via Getty Images

We kind of undersell how nice the Vancouver Canucks jerseys are because it's easy to get lost in how great they look and also how they compared to the jerseys just before this set, which had "Vancouver" spelled out above the logo.

That one switch in 2019 did their jerseys a world of good. Making that crest stand out more was vital, and who in the world was going to forget they were playing Vancouver in the first place?

The original stick-in-rink logo on the shoulders is a great touch and the combination of blue, green and white blends so well together. It's a clean and classic look that's hard to beat (aside from the teams that all rank above them anyway).

Now, if they ever switched full-time to their "flying skate" throwback style uniforms...that might vault them into the top five.

15. Anaheim Ducks

Anaheim first-round pick, 23rd overall, Stian Solberg Candice Ward/Getty Images

We mentioned how great it was when the Nashville Predators went all-in on embracing gold for their home jerseys, and the Anaheim Ducks copied their playbook by going for broke with orange.

Even more importantly, they brought back a revamped version of their original Disney-inspired logo as their main crest.

The new jerseys are a huge win for Anaheim and considering we ranked them 29th going into last season, it's a massive improvement.

Going bonkers with orange, given they're located in Orange County, California, is a great idea if not a little on the nose. Somehow the duck-mask logo looks even meaner than it used to and in totality, this jersey has touches to it that encompass their history.

It's not just the old Mighty Ducks logo, it's the more recent webbed foot "D" logo on the shoulders and the way the sleeves are designed that mimic what they've done in recent years. Add in the drop shadow numbers and names and that makes for a great rebrand.

It will be a lot of fun to see how these jerseys look on the ice when the Ducks fly together once again. The orange will certainly be unmistakable and unforgettable.

14. Dallas Stars

Sam Hodde/Getty Images

The Dallas Stars rebrand in 2013 was such a breath of fresh air for a team that desperately needed it when it came to its look.

The Stars' jerseys and logo before that had become stale and, even more upsetting, boring. Their logo went away from their jerseys replaced by just the city name across the front, and it was all so criminal for a franchise that once had one of the all-time great logos.

But since they went all-green and busted out a new logo, it's been such a wonderful change, and their home jerseys are as good as ever.

The gigantic logo on the front, the circular logo on the shoulders and the clean white and black stripes on the sleeves and hem make this a perfect jersey.

It might seem a little plain at first, but when they had done so little before this, embracing a loud green color and a new logo made for huge upgrades that just work.

13. San Jose Sharks

Jeff Vinnick/NHLI via Getty Images

The San Jose Sharks threw it back to their original days in a modern way in 2022 and ditched all the tinkering they'd done since then and went all-in on wearing teal. Fully teal jerseys, teal helmets and even teal breezers.

It's a lot of teal and fortunately for them the 1990s being back in a big way only helped that out. But in all honesty, having the modernized version of their original logo along with an updated version of the circular shark-fin logo on the shoulders helped make this jersey an instant classic.

Sometimes you don't have to try so hard to do something new that people will love. Sometimes all it takes is having reverence for what used to be a huge fan favorite and doing it over again in a clean way.

San Jose absolutely nailed it.

12. Boston Bruins

Bruins first-round pick Dean Letourneau Candice Ward/Getty Images

After celebrating their 100th anniversary season, the Boston Bruins are bringing back what they wore before and...we're kind of bummed out that they did.

Their centennial collection was so well done and reverential to their 1980s jerseys that it was hard to not love them. This isn't to say that their new-not-so-old jerseys aren't good, but we really liked the centennial jerseys.

That said, there's zero wrong with these jerseys. The gold collar with the old Bruins logo on the shoulders and the massive spoked "B" on the front makes it iconic.

If there's anything Original Six teams were able to get right (for the most part) it was their jerseys and iconography. Boston's is as good as it gets.

11. Detroit Red Wings

Dave Reginek/NHLI via Getty Images

Speaking of perfect Original Six logos and jerseys, the Detroit Red Wings are just that as well.

It's so simple and easy to put together and there's no reason why they should ever change a thing about their look. It's tied to them; it's been copied off them repeatedly, and they're OK with it because they know it's theirs. Imitation and flattery and all that.

The winged-wheel logo is Detroit and if it can get back to the playoffs one of these years, it'll grow in appreciation around the hockey world again. That and searing, burning hatred as well. Rivalries run deep, man.

10. New York Islanders

Bruce Bennett/Getty Images

The New York Islanders are another prime example of why past looks never get old.

The Isles always tried to tweak and mess around with their jerseys (and infamously their logo as well) only to wind up circling back around to what was great the first time around.

Their classic logo on the blue jersey with orange and white stripes is perfect. Messing with the best means making fans on Long Island angry; and if there's ever a reason to not mess with anything, that's a good enough one to leave well enough alone, especially with jerseys.

It's a perfect look that has withstood the test of time and resisted change as hard as possible, which is deeply ironic in its own way all things considered.

9. Toronto Maple Leafs

Claus Andersen/Getty Images

There are few logos better than the Toronto Maple Leafs' old-fashioned style leaf with the team name emblazoned on it. Setting it upon a blue jersey with white stripes makes it iconic and perfect.

Sure, there have been minor tweaks over the years to the jersey, the shoulders and even the logo itself, but it's remained the same way throughout the decades for the most part.

Messing with the best means dying with the rest and you could argue that their ill-fated Reverse Retro designs proved that. Try all you want, but there are few things better than the classic Maple Leafs jersey.

Sure, they could stand to have more playoff success, but now that they're a perennial playoff team again, the look of the Leafs is as fixed in pop culture as it ever has before.

Justin Bieber may have had a hand in that as well, but let's not split hairs.

8. New Jersey Devils

Adam Hunger/Getty Images

We know it can be easy to forget about the New Jersey Devils, what with them getting drowned out by the teams across the river in New York and all, but their look? That's truly unforgettable.

The Devils' logo is one of the best in sports and perfectly encapsulates where they're from and who they are. When the team switched from red and green to red and black in 1992, it was the perfect move to help make the whole look tie together.

Sure, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls may have helped make that style decision easier at the time, but what other colors would you associate with a team called the Devils anyway?

No matter how they've slightly tweaked the look of the home jersey, it's always come away as one of the smoothest ones in the league.

7. Philadelphia Flyers

Len Redkoles/NHLI via Getty Images

How iconic does a look have to be in order to serve as the inspiration for a team of tough guys in a movie? That's what the Philadelphia Flyers did for orange and black.

The Flyers going to a throwback look with "burnt orange" as the main color last season and jerseys that made you think of a few different eras from franchise history helped hammer home the point that nothing beats their look when it's done right.

It's a clean look that is unmistakable and when teams have a style that is so specifically their own and they own it, there's nothing better.

Tinkering with different styles might help sell more jerseys because fans want the new thing, but making the new thing look kind of like the old, good thing is almost always going to work.

6. Pittsburgh Penguins

Jeanine Leech/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images

The Pittsburgh Penguins going back to their Stanley Cup looks from the early 1990s when Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr ran roughshod all over the league and piled up goals was such an easy call to make in the end.

Black and gold are synonymous with Pittsburgh, and this particular style of jersey is what the team wore when it won the Stanley Cup in back-to-back years in the 1990s. Being able to have Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang all wear it now helps tie the old days with the current ones.

That the Penguins won the Cup in back-to-back years wearing them again in 2016 and 2017 only cemented how perfect a look it is.

5. Buffalo Sabres

Bill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images

While success has been difficult for the Buffalo Sabres to find on the ice, they can take solace in the fact that they have one of the best uniform sets in the entire NHL, especially their home jerseys.

The royal blue jersey with the gold and white stripes along with the Sabres logo that aptly has the pictogram of the team's name contained with it is as good as it gets.

And like so many other teams, it was one they nailed from the start only to tinker with it and change it a couple other times and then wind up back at the beginning again.

Even if the Sabres switched to their black and red alternate as their home jersey, they'd probably still rank in the top 10. That said, their blue and gold set is among the elite home and road combos in the league.

4. Calgary Flames

Gerry Thomas/NHLI via Getty Images

What do you think of when you picture fire? If you're a hockey fan, you probably immediately think of the Calgary Flames and how perfect their jerseys are, particularly the home reds.

Their logo is perfect. The red, yellow and white color set is perfect for it. The striping, the numbers and the massive size of the logo crest on the front are all perfect. When you're watching the Flames, you know it instantaneously.

Calgary's home jerseys are one of the few that will help make any game's jersey matchup look roughly 100 percent better than if it were some other teams. The look makes you think of the Battle of Alberta with the Edmonton Oilers throughout the 1980s when it was truly a war on ice. It makes you picture Lanny McDonald lifting the Stanley Cup in 1989 and Al MacInnis hitting 100 mph slap shots.

This Calgary Flames jersey is old-time hockey, and we love it.

3. New York Rangers

Jared Silber/NHLI via Getty Images

There are so few home jerseys that are as suited to their team than the New York Rangers' sweater. They're called the Blueshirts and having blue jerseys and being the Rangers and playing in Manhattan make for the perfect setup to have an iconic jersey.

Being an Original Six team helps that out a lot, but the whole style of the Rangers jersey is perfect. Drop-shadowed letters and numbers, the diagonal spelling of "Rangers" on the front, the last name being arched on the back. It's perfect.

Rangers jerseys also have the special ability to bring the heat out of any opposing fan instantly.

A jersey as an iconic calling card makes it truly special.

2. Edmonton Oilers

Dave Sandford/NHLI via Getty Images

One of the many perks of seeing the Edmonton Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Final was viewing Connor McDavid's brilliance while also wearing one of the best jerseys in the history of the NHL.

The Oilers' home blue jersey with the orange yoke surrounded with a white border while the sleeves were adorned with white, orange and blue stripes is harmony in a textile. The classic logo on the front hammers it all home.

It's a look born in the late-1970s and perfected in the 1980s with those Stanley Cup-winning teams with Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier among countless other Hall of Fame players.

It may be no coincidence that the moment the Oilers decided to wear these jerseys at home in the playoffs as opposed to their navy blue and dark orange alternates that they wound up a win away from winning the sixth Stanley Cup in team history.

It's definitely a coincidence, but if it helps the team shelve those hideous alternates for good, we'll take it. Why would you even want to wear those when there's perfection already there.

It's further proof that the classics never die.

1. Montréal Canadiens

Minas Panagiotakis/Getty Images

There is no jersey that exists now, then or ever that will surpass the bleu, blanc et rouge "CH" of the Montréal Canadiens.

A Canadiens jersey is why we sometimes call them "sweaters" because it demands that kind or respect. It is the hockey jersey to end all jerseys. The style and look of a Habs jersey is as iconic as the pinstripes are for the New York Yankees, and messing with it is as close to a capital offense as you'll find in sports.

The current style of the Canadiens' home and away jerseys has been virtually untouched (apart from the NHL mandating adding names to the back in 1977) since 1947. For more than 70 years they've maintained the same look. You won't find anyone who legitimately wants them to do something else with it.

It's perfect and there are none better.
