49ers' Top Trade Candidates Ahead of 2024 Training Camp

Joe Tansey

The San Francisco 49ers have one of the NFL's top trade targets on their roster.

Brandon Aiyuk's contract negotiations have not been resolved and that has left the 49ers in an awkward spot of wanting to keep the star wide receiver, but also receiving trade interest in him.

Of course, most teams in the league would love to have someone like Aiyuk on their roster, but a trade has to come at the right price for the 49ers.

San Francisco would ideally get a deal done, or push the situation to the backburner, before the start of the 2024 season, but that does not appear to be happening anytime soon.

The 49ers have a few other trade targets on their roster, but right now, Aiyuk is the sole focus of the trade market.

Brandon Aiyuk's situation has not gotten any better.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported on Tuesday that Aiyuk and the 49ers "are no closer to a deal" despite recent talks between the two sides. (h/t NBC Sports Bay Area).

Aiyuk is scheduled to become a free agent in 2025, and if he does sign a new deal, the 49ers are prepared for his exit. They selected Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing in the 2024 NFL draft to fill depth behind Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings.

The 49ers could look to get something in return for Aiyuk at some point in 2024 if the contract negotiations do not improve.

San Francisco should do its best to keep the star wide receiver, but it may not be able to do that from a financial perspective since it still has to pay quarterback Brock Purdy.

Plenty of teams need a No. 1 or No. 2 wide receiver across the NFL. That makes a potential Aiyuk deal intriguing because the 49ers could get a decent draft pick haul if negotiations completely fall apart.

The 49ers probably have to move on from one of their veteran depth running backs.

Elijah Mitchell's spot on the depth chart could be under threat by fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo.

Mitchell had a breakout season in 2021 where he almost hit the 1,000-yard mark, but he has not hit the 300-yard mark in either of the last two seasons.

Christian McCaffrey's arrival has a lot to do with the drop in production, and if Mitchell believes he can be a No. 1 running back in the NFL, it simply is not happening in San Francisco.

Mitchell's two sub-300-yard seasons might not intrigue some teams, but he has previous responsibility as the top guy and averaged over 4.5 yards per carry in two of his three NFL seasons.

Guerendo and Jordan Mason can be good insurance policies for McCaffrey if Mitchell moves on. Any market for Mitchell would likely develop once training camp begins. One injury could change the entire running back market.

Jordan Mason's roster spot is more under threat than Mitchell's.

Mason likely enters training camp as the No. 4 running back behind McCaffrey, Mitchell and Guerendo.

The 25-year-old has 464 rushing yards and four touchdowns to his name over two NFL seasons. He also averaged over five yards per carry in each campaign.

The yards per carry numbers should at least intrigue some teams in need of running back depth.

Mason may be better off signing with another team after a potential release, but the 49ers could get a late Day 3 pick for him if a team is that interested in him.
