MLB Rumors: Phillies' Bryce Harper, Schwarber Avoided Serious Injury; Placed on IL

Philadelphia Phillies stars Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber were placed on the 10-day injured list, but both have avoided serious ailments, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic.

Harper suffered a low-grade hamstring strain. He can return as soon as July 9.

However, Gelb noted the team could opt to sit Harper for the rest of the season's first half to give him more rest time with the All-Star break occurring from July 15-18.

That would mean sitting the team's home series against the Los Angeles Dodgers (July 9-11) and Oakland Athletics (July 12-14).

Schwarber has a mild groin strain, but he may only spend the minimum 10 days on the IL, per Gelb.

Kody Clemens and Johan Rojas were recalled as Harper and Schwarber's replacements on the roster.

Harper suffered his hamstring injury while trying to run to first base on a groundball that ended up being the final out of the Phillies' 7-4 loss to the Miami Marlins on Thursday.

He's had a sensational season for the 53-28 Phillies, who sport the MLB's top record. For the year, Harper has hit .303 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI.

Schwarber suffered the groin injury while making a throw from the outfield in the ninth inning.

"I reached down to grab the ball barehanded and kind of planted for the throw and felt it grab," Schwarber said, per Anthony SanFilippo of the Associated Press. "I thought it was just a cramp at first and I finished the inning. But, as I was running in (between innings) I could still kind of feel it, so I talked to the trainer and he didn't like where the spot was … so he wanted to get me out of there."

Schwarber, who usually plays as the team's designated hitter, has 17 home runs, 49 RBI and an .820 OPS.

So the Phillies are going to have to be without their best hitter in Harper and one of their top power threats in Schwarber for a bit. Here's what the lineup looks like Friday against the Marlins with both of them out.

Harper and Schwarber will miss the team's next three home games against Miami before sitting a six-game road trip against the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves.
