Warriors Rumors: Chris Paul Contract Deadline Pushed Back amid Paul George Trade Buzz

The Golden State Warriors and point guard Chris Paul have reportedly agreed to move the guarantee date on the $30.8 million owed to him for the 2024-25 season from Friday to Sunday as the team continues to look for a suitable trade partner.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski broke the news.

The news also drops amid the Warriors' reported interest in giving Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George a four-year max deal, per ESPN's Brian Windhorst on Wednesday on Get Up (h/t RealGM).

"Three years at a little bit less than the max contract, and Paul George, frankly, wants four years," Windhorst said.

"He wants a full out max and there are a number of teams out there, I am told, that are prepared to give it to him, who are prepared to trade for him. One of those teams, potentially, is up the coast in Golden State."

Sam Amick and Anthony Slater of The Athletic also reported Friday that the Warriors are believed to have "legitimate interest" in making George part of their core.

Paul once appeared to be the part of the Warriors' core. Golden State made a big move last last July in a trade with the Washington Wizards, who added CP3 via the Phoenix Suns two weeks prior.

But the Warriors never got going in 2023-24, finishing 46-36 before losing in their first play-in game to the Sacramento Kings, ending their season.

Now Golden State is going back to the drawing board. It's already clear, per the Wojnarowski report, that the team wants to move on from Paul. This could be it for Klay Thompson in Golden State after 13 seasons with the five-time All-Star entering free agency and talks between the two sides "frozen," per a June 22 report from Slater.

And Andrew Wiggins' time in San Francisco could be over, with league sources telling Logan Murdock of The Ringer that he's expected to be "aggressively dangled" in trade talks.

Ultimately, it's not hard to read between the lines here. The Warriors very likely want to shake up their roster, and moving off Paul and his $30.8 million salary appears to be a big part of the plan. And from Paul's side, he appears amenable to leaving town if he agreed to give the Warriors two more days to potentially figure out a trade before free agency begins Sunday.

The big key is to see whether the Warriors can finesse these moves and give George that four-year max, making for an intriguing big three with him, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green flanked by young talents such as Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.

On paper, that would appear to put the Warriors in far better position for a playoff run, which would be a welcome sight after a bitterly disappointing ending in 2023-24.
