Clippers' Kawhi Leonard Expected to Be Ready for USA Olympic Camp Amid Knee Injury

Kawhi Leonard is expected to be ready for the United States when Olympic training camp opens next week.

Head coach Steve Kerr told reporters on Thursday that Team USA expects to have all 12 players on the roster participating in camp starting on July 6.

Leonard missed 12 of the final 14 games for the Los Angeles Clippers between the regular season and playoffs due to a knee injury.

USA Basketball announced the 12-player roster for the 2024 Olympics on April 17, three days after the end of the NBA regular season. Leonard had missed eight straight games at that point due to inflammation in his right knee.

It seemed like Leonard was doing okay when he returned to the Clippers' lineup for Game 2 of their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks. He played 35 minutes but looked limited with just 15 points on 7-of-17 shooting.

Leonard also played in Game 3, but his playing time was cut down to 25 minutes. The two-time NBA Finals MVP only took seven shots, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

The Clippers ultimately kept Leonard out for the final three games against the Mavs. He told reporters prior to Game 5 that his knee "didn't respond" the way they were hoping during the off days between Games 2 and 3.

Leonard has had multiple surgeries on his right knee, starting with repairing a torn ACL suffered in the second round of the 2021 playoffs. He tore the meniscus in that same knee in Game 2 against the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 2023 postseason.

It will be interesting to see how much Kerr uses Leonard throughout the Olympics. This will mark his first time playing for Team USA in the Olympics. He was previously a finalist for the roster in 2016 and 2020.

The U.S. team will play a five-game showcase schedule leading up to the Olympics starting on July 10 against Canada. Their first game in group play at the Summer Games will be against Serbia on July 28.
